Big Lots, the mega-retailer that specializes in really low prices on really odd assortments of stuff - basically, whatever their supplier has too much of - just launched its new website with a Woot-like "Deal of the Day" section. But perhaps most interesting is cartoon spokesmodel Anita Deal, who bears a striking resemblance to a certain vice-presidential candidate.

The Anita Deal character does look a little bit like Palin, and as such, I look forward to a day, when after her failed bid for the vice presidency has brought such negative scrutiny on her time as governor that she is forced from the office, and desperate to remain in the limelight, she takes a job as a live action version of the cartoon spokes-model.

I see her, standing there, holding the coffee cup, staring with dead eyes into the camera, thinking of what might have been.

And I'm happy.

How many days left?

And, as for the Jewess comment.. looks like it can go either way, why make a big deal about it?

Jew·ess (js)

A Jewish woman or girl.
Usage Note: Like many other English nouns in which the suffix -ess is added to a gender-neutral word to indicate femaleness, the terms Jewess and Negress are now widely regarded as offensive. It is interesting to note that the objection to words formed with the -ess suffix does not apply to words such as Latina and Chicana, whose contrasting forms Latino and Chicano are not gender-neutral but rather refer even in English primarily to males.

"Madam, your daughter is a whoress. She came to me willingly. And as for your daughter's innocence, I seem to recall the absence of that from your dowry didn't diminish your prospects."

Eh, in some ways it does. I bought a futon there, and it was much better than the ones Wal-Mart had for the same price. The futon pad was almost twice as thick, and the frame was more solid as well. In fact, I went to pretty much every furniture store in town, and could not find a futon with a better price:quality ratio. I'm still really happy with the deal I got.

Some Big Lots don't have furniture, and those are definitely closer to dollar-stores than anything else, but the furniture ones are great.

A well built reliable version of that drill is actually pretty nice. You can have one head holding a drill bit and another holding a phillips head bit. Then you can drill a hole switch and place a screw in a few seconds. Way easier than swapping out bits each time. But a crappily made drill will just fall apart and waste your time and money.

Since this FPP could be interpreted as viral advertising for Big Lots, let be counter it by saying that the the Big Lots store in my town, based on two different visits, has the SADDEST CRAP I have ever seen for sale anywhere.

I confine myself to the food area of the local Big Lots, where if you root around a little you can find great snacks for very cheap - everything from packs of Wasa crisps to Anna's ginger cookies to dried edamame nuts to ten different kinds of hot sauce from companies all around the country. I think a lot of stuff ends up at Big Lots simply because of surplus stock still in warehouses after packaging design changes, or because a distributor went out of business suddenly and had to liquidate inventory.

No Big Lots can compete, however, with the most depressing store I ever shopped in, which was a McCrory's on the outskirts of New Haven near where I lived c. 1988. Just walking through the front doors was like plunging into a deep clinical depression.

Re: Jewess - speaking as someone who grew up in the suburbs on the East Coast, the only times I have heard it used were by young hip Jewish women referring to themselves with a large dollop of (gentile-mocking) irony. Using it non-ironically makes you sound like an 18th century encyclopedia, billybobtoo. Which isn't a compliment, in case that's not clear.

Last but not least, those despairing of the Palin-esque mascot should just be glad BL no longer uses Jerry Van Dyke for a spokesman.

Understandable, but surely invoking the word "jewess" in itself was meant for stereotypical effect? Rather, it would have never been chosen for any other reason THAN to invoke the stereotype.

Also understand that I do not believe merely invoking a stereotype is sufficient for offense and outrage. There has to be intent in there.

Kind of like the thread a few days ago about using the phrase "jew someone down (from a price)". With no malice, I believe that to be simply a bit of an anachronism, not a slur.

Maybe put another way, I don't think you can slur someone accidentally. You have to have malicious intent. The words in and of themselves don't really commit the slur. A person has to.

Alright you drill defenders, listen up. Yes I know occasionally you have to drill pilot holes and then drive screws. I built railings around my front porch for which I had to do that twice per end for every one of approximately a million stiles. I did think of that job when I saw the asshole drill.

BUT

There are two factors that make this still a drill strictly for assholes.

One: It is not that hard to change bits, even a goodly number of times. Also, when you have to drill and screw, you should usually be countersinking too, which means you'll still have to change bits. Buy one good drill and learn how to use it.

and Two: I only had to switch bits a million times because I didn't have a pneumatic stapler, which was clearly the correct tool for the job.

I stand firm in my assertion that that is a dumb drill. Some tools just should not be.
