Some of these are quite stunning.

I prefer the (less orthodox) work of Br. Robert Lentz OFM.

Jesus Christ, Liberator
Christ Sophia
Sts. Sergius and Bacchus
Albert Einstein
Cesar Chavez
Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Dorothy Day of New York
J.R.R. Tolkien
Mother Jones of America

I regularly rotate these into our Taize services.

Gave me flash-backs to my Nan's parlour, though it seems they're not so big on the Sacred Heart in the Orthodox Church. Also, St. Giovanni Bosco looks quite a bit like Ian Holm. I enjoyed having a poke around but was left with the impression that the digital versions are a long way from doing the originals justice.

Just glad to see it doesn't have an annoying flash based navigation that's impossible to figure out and never takes me where I want to go.

Not really my style, but cool nonetheless.

As I scrolled down his bio page I was interested to see the work he did for Versace, Icon Cushions. Ever since that Mad Men show last Sunday, I've been thinking about the use of religion in advertising, the use of icon imagery in selling products or politicians.

I tend to like the old Russian icons more.

My mother has been painting (or some would say "writing") icons for several years now. There is a whole symbolism such that every detail means something; one of the more interesting themes found in some icons is the 3-handed Mary; unfortunately I cannot recall exactly what it means. Also, the beginning iconographer starts off small, with one of the lesser saints, then working up through Gabriel and finally painting Mary and Jesus. At least at the the school where she learned there is a lot of emphasis on traditional methods; she buys her own pigments and makes her own paint with them and prepares the board in a certain way and so on. Interesting stuff and a good subject for a post.
