The New York Times editorial staff has formally endorsed Barack Obama.

And I made a Barack O'Lantern tonight, but one-link editorial does not a good post make.

New York Times can't get an endorsement from S&P, tho...

Well, good FPP or no, I quite enjoyed reading the editorial so thanks for that.

Nice work, cowbelle.

Thank you, aheckler. This kind of enthusiasm from a 21 year-old for any election makes me happy, and that it is for this one, and this candidate, is even better.

However, this is still not a good post for MetaFilter.

Well, sure. It's because the New York Times is black.

No snark intended, but... Is there a way to keep all the deleted posts on the front page, showing the deletion reason? I mean so everyone can see it, not just Greasemonkey users.

I dunno. Maybe it will help.

Time for mods to toss the coin on whether THIS single-link political post stays or goes.

(Seriously I don't care which way, but there's no consistent logic to the axe, I swear. Every day a couple are deleted, and a couple stay, even if they have 50 comments and conversations happening within. No discernible pattern, even.)

What's black and white and red all over?

Barack Obama.

Are we still in the backlash, or are we now in the anti-backlash backlash? And does this comment itself (and its snide, facetious tone) represent the beginning of the anti-anti-backlash backlash? I should have paid more attention in semiotics.

Well, sure. It's because the New York Times is black.

... and white and read all over.

(red all over just like communists.)

I agree there should most definitely be a deleted posts area that everyone can see. How the heck can we ever learn, otherwise?

I will now move to MeTa. :)

I see what you did with the Colbert quote there, but still not even close to the most interesting or significant endorsement from a publication. Probably not a whole lot of undecided voters reading the NYT (or any other newspaper, I'd guess. Because, seriously, you're still undecided?).

The MetaFilter Wiki states that, in short, a good FPP is something both new and interesting. I think this article qualifies.

aheckler,

On a serious note, this post isn't bad per se, it's just part of the tidal wave of political posts and since it's just a single link to an obvious story, when there has already been a post about a newspaper endorsing Barack, it'll probably be deleted.

If you don't mind suggestions, I think fleshing the post out with more relevant material (an ex bush aide endorse Obama today also) or even a bit of background or history on why and when newspapers started doing endorsements would have this a more informative and interesting post.

Yeah, there's no personal ill will here. And maybe a mod will come and delete all these comments and let the post stand. BBs advice is good.

Hell, Handsome Dick Manitoba endorsed him to me (on the advice of Bruce Springsteen) months ago. That carries more weight.

Yeah, I love the Obama and I love the NYT, but even I this link is overkill. I'm still in the midst of 2 election threads that haven't slowed down and can't afford another.

Quick. Someone find a link to a paper that is endorsing McCain and make that an FPP.
posted by strangeleftydoublethink at 8:37 PM on October 23, 2008

Speaking of deleted posts and how the times they are a-changing, I found this via the PoliticsFilter that disappeared a couple of hours ago: Eric Boehlert on the demise of Matt Drudge's influence.

Start putting all these pieces together and maybe you've got something.

What a great post!

Really? It's a single link to the New York Times editorial. As far a a post is concerned, it's crap.

Sure, great editorial, but not a great post on MiFi.
posted by mattoxic at 8:48 PM on October 23, 2008

I wouldn't mind seeing a post that used this endorsement as a launching point, then went on to discuss the overall pattern and the most common rationales. It's an interesting topic, more so this year than in most election years because of all of the crossover support Obama's getting.

But people who post single links to top news items should be dragged out into the street and shot.
posted by Epenthesis at 8:50 PM on October 23, 2008

And somehow the NYT poll finding Obama gaining among 2004 Bush voters goes unreported in this FPP? That's by far the most interesting story, IMO: The NYT endorsing the Democratic candidate is entirely predictable.

The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament has also endorsed Barack Obama. (Should I have made this an FPP? How many milliseconds do you think it would have lasted before being deleted?)

Dig deep into that organization and you'll find CIA/FBI operatives in so deep they've forgotten where they came from. And yeah, FOX News will be all over it.
