I could of sworn this has been on the blue before, but maybe I'm just crazy.

way better than SQUARE!

That's hilarious, all that retro quantization and banding in the video! Oh wait, that's state of the art DVD encoding.

Yeah, I'm thinking double, but still, good stuff.

The music... the voice... it's fantastic.

Hilarious. I think that the dreaded analog synth sounds were about as bad as the "dreaded cone" though. But I get it.

I don't understand why the Cube was sometimes different colors. Were those shots from the multiplayer, or can you unlock different costumes/power-ups? If the latter, how? Does anyone have a link to a FAQ/walkthrough?

I want to play CUBE.
Really, where's the download?
I need something like this after Final Fantasy XII.

Some days I seriously feel like I might as well have two heads. This to me seems a perfect example of the example-glutted YouTube problem of videos whose duration solidly outlasts their joke. This video, for example, would have been more effective at zero seconds long.

It looks better than Spore, anyhoo.

Spectre anyone?
posted by Fuzzy Skinner at 2:00 PM on October 24, 2008 [1 favorite]

Sure, it fell a little flat in places(dreaded cone? please...), but the pronounciation and intonation every time it said "CUBE!" was perfect, and well worth the rest of the video.

CUBE!

Like the line about making a calculator look like a cotton gin?

And "the fun cannot be halted."

They had to go hang a lantern on it.

Spectre. That was good game.
posted by MarshallPoe at 2:14 PM on October 24, 2008

I played an early beta of this and it was pretty good. The green level was probably my favorite (the video didn't do it justice, there were at least three more ramps). The red level was complete bullshit though. The Dreaded Cone is totally undefeatable. It doesn't matter what you do; you can go left: you die, you can go right: you die, you can go forward: you guessed it, you die. (ooh, I didn't think to try backward... shit, I might have just figured that level out...)

Anyhow, it was pretty cool I guess. I still think the whole idea is just a rip-off of the Box franchise, but you know, imitation and flattery and all that.

Who knew that Grindhouse style trailers would translate so well into video-games?

Replace the CUBE with a crudley modelled tank and you basically have bzflag.

Man, fuck that evil cone.

Veiled feminism rears its head once again in advanced video game design. We are told that the phallic cone is the evil end game boss that the heroic box must overcome to attain freedom. I'm not taken in by those stunning graphics and gameplay. I know this is yet another attempt to make me feel guilty for possessing a penis.

Better than: "Cube 2: Hypercube," but not as good as the original "Cube," or even "Time Cube."

I, too, was ready to pour haterade all over this, and then I actually watched it. As soon as I heard "doot doot doot doot doot doot...

CUBE."

I was all over that shit. Yes, I say, yes.

According to Wikipedia, some versions were PC compatible. But that was long ago. Maybe there's a file floating around somewhere to try it out.
