These photos are the reasons I don't participate in Hallowe'en. Sort of. I love the photos and costumes. What I hate are contemporary costumes that are either idiotic celebrities or rubber masks of Freddie or Batman or whatever. Hallowe'en is about being scary, not about being a billboard for some idiotic product or person. It's bloody depressing going out on the 31st and has been for the past 25 years or so.

Thanks for the link.

Dude, some of those look like the 'muppet baby' version of Eyes Wide Shut.

Fabulous! Thanks so much. Kind of sad to see those moments frozen in time...

Did any of those people believe 2008 would ever really come to pass?
Makes me sad as well.

If I could favorite this a hundred times and then make it autoplay when you click through to this thread, I would.

For those of you disgusted with the Halloween costumes of today, the Tor blog has something to say about it too: Down with Stripper Heels: A Candy-Corn-and-Bile-Flavored Halloween Pep Talk.

very, very creepy (reminded me of that short-lived HBO show, Carnivale).

natabat, thanks for the link; speaking from the girl side, I can tell you that it gets harder and harder to find a woman's costume that isnt' "sexxxy." Which of course means, make your own, ladies! Don't buy into the slut-costume-industrial complex!

For the record, my toddler this year is going as a bee. Black t-shirt with yellow tape stripes, homemade wings (made from a bent wire hanger + white pantyhose leg) a bee antenna headband he got for free as a party favor, and loves, thus inspiring the costume, and black sweatpants. Voila. Still deciding if he needs a stinger; probably not. His dad will wear a matching set of antenna. I'm just wearing a little makeup, since I'll be on candy duty this year. Next year, maybe we'll all coordinate.

Those were cool. It's fun to think of all those people at home making papier mache and getting excited for a version of halloween that probably didn't involve doign shots and sprying people with shaving cream.
I wonder what their parties were like.

I wonder what their parties were like.

They were in black and white and smelled of sarsaparilla and pumpkins.

Hallowe'en is about being scary, not about being a billboard for some idiotic product or person.

Well for me Halloween is about putting together a costume and just having some fun. I've noticed it's a night where far greater people go out and everyone is so much more social. Granted it's all in the particular world I live in and all based on just what I've observed but it seems like everyone is friendlier.

I would never want to just buy an expensive mask, but not everyone wants to be creative. I do think all the "sexxxy" costumes are pretty crappy. I'm ok with Halloween being about going out and just being someone else or showcasing your costume. I'm ok with it not being scary because spooky things aren't scary to me. I don't do haunted houses or scary movies because I don't get any enjoyment out of the scare factor.

Halloween is a different sort of fun from the rest of the year. Slightly anonymous, being someone else sort of fun. This is why I have participated in Halloween for many years and will do so for a great many to come.

There is an easy antidote to the whole "sexxxy" costume trend. Simply take any costume idea for which there is a popular "sexxxy" version and replace "sexxxy" with "zombie."

Let it be said if anyone approached my house like that....it's lights out and no candy.

Oh man those pictures were awesometastic!!! That is the kind of costume making that I always want to see. I have to agree so much that the sexxxy bullshit is so boring. Those pictures were my kind of Halloween.
