Chalk one more up for the Dems

This post was deleted for the following reason: I'm personally stoked about this too, but we really can't go crazy with the line-item election posts. -- cortex

That is awesome. Merkley is a cool guy, really interesting background, and a hard worker. Hopefully he kicks ass in the Senate.

In other election news, it turns out that Sarah Palin didn't know Africa was a continent.

I am so happy to hear that, it was a close race. But honestly, if Brownlow hadn't been there then Merkley wouldn't have won it. Smith sneaked in by being somewhat centrist, but I've been amazed at his continual re-election in this tried and true blue state.

Yes, but did William Bailey win the Oregon 4th?

Wait, wait... they were holding back the "bad" things about Palin?

We're gonna need more thread.

82% OF ESTIMATED VOTES COUNTED

And he's winning by 2,500? I'm not so sure.

This call seems a bit premature. According to their tally, only 82% of the votes have been counted. This thing is far from over.

Has Metafilter become a headline blog?

Couldn't this have gone in the existing election thread?

Wait, wait... they were holding back the "bad" things about Palin?

Carl Cameron actually says in that clip that "there is to be an avalanche that will continue for many days now, we're told, of story upon story of the foibles of Sarah Palin."

The Republicans are trying to bury Palin before she tries any crazy shenanigans like running in 2012. The keepers of the Party know that McCain effed up and that Palin is poison for the GOP brand (what's left of it).

But at least it's first.

I've been tracking this election all day. This is over. All the remaining ballots to be counted are from the heavily Democratic counties around Portland and Eugene. A pollster early this morning called it for Merkley even when Smith held a 10,000 vote lead.

This county-by-county tally should make you feel at ease

but the 18% that's left is hippy-trippy blue and should favor Merkley heavily

...meanwhile, I'm pretty sure in my home state Al Franken is fucked. But I'm trying to remain positive on this amazing day. Did you hear we elected Obama?? GODDAMN!

It's a sure thing when you see where the rest of the outstanding votes are... namely Portland.

(God, I love Portland...!)

I knew this was going to happen last night, when I saw how overwhelming Merkley's margins were around Portland, and noticed that such a small percentage of the area's votes hadn't been counted yet.

Sure is nice when all the votes count, isn't it?!

Hooray from uber-hippy-trippy SE Portland!

I'd be happier if he hadn't run such a greasy campaign against Steve Novick, who is seriously awesome, but probably too much of a political outsider to have had a great shot at this point in his career. But yes, I voted for him (Merkley) and even flipped him a few bucks, mostly to reduce the (R) Senate base but also because of his decent environmental voting record.

P.S. This is kind of a lousy post.

"Projects" is a funny word. Especially if you don't realize that "Oregonian" refers to a newspaper.

Portland isn't hippy-trippy... you're thinking of Ashland!

You can't even spot a tie-die in Portland, unless you're on Hawthorne Street...

...which is the coolest place to be, of course.

For me, Portland is all about Powell's, and the Cup & Saucer Cafe.
