your most imaginative metaphor for the Bush years and Obama's election

As I wrote to friends thanking them for working on the Obama campaign and sharing a well-earned "Yay for our side!" cheer, I struggled for a good metaphor to describe how I felt. I mean, people around the world were dancing in the streets at news of Obama's victory! When was the last time people around the world danced in the streets over ANY American action?
Here's what I came up with:
America is everybody's brilliant but unstable Uncle that you thought you knew and liked until one day he went off the deep end, descending into a crazy, destructive drinking binge, smashing everything within reach and firing wild random gunshots at anybody in his sight. For a long, long time. So long that you mourn the loss of your old friend and begin to forget what he was like. But *thank God* one day Uncle America wakes up clear-eyed, calm and sober, and appears to be talking sense for the first time in years and you're so, so glad to have the old guy back. And you hope he'll stuck around for a while this time.
A friend wrote back to me:
Yet another analogy comes to mind (I’m sure they are countless!), King Theoden possessed by evil spirits and under the influence of Grima Wormtongue for eight miserable years…
This guy is very imaginative. I love these.
OK, let's hear them: Channel your muses. What is your most creative metaphor for the Bush years and/or Obama's election?

Posting what your friend wrote, and what you wrote, is basically self-linking, but you seem to be so confused about the general "metafilter" thing that maybe it should be forgiven.
