Yeah, it's such a step down to be on Star Trek - which is now the horse that has been whipped, dead, brought back to life, and whipped some more... I'll stick with my QL memories...

Actually after seeing DS9 and Voyager go downhill like they did, hearing that a talent like his will be on the new Trek series gives a renewed sense of hope. Who better to take us where no one has gone before than Scott Bakula? Shame they can't also hire Gillian Anderson as a smart and sassy green orion slave girl they picked up along the way. *smirk*

Wow! My past comes back to haunt me on MeFi (I was one of the first subscribers to the OBSSE mailing list; eventually unsubbed, but still a member). The fans that run the Scully Marathon are great people.

Farscape rocks. Not as good as B5 at its best, and there are some structural issues right now, but interesting, edgy, chance-taking sf.
My local Scully Marathon apparently started 2 hours ago (and it's only a bike ride away). Sniff. Maybe next year.

Can't wait for the new B5! Thanks, Aaaugh. I haven't watched Farscape, but I have heard nothing but positive things about it. Just don't have enough free time for more than one or two "must watch" shows.

Maybe I'm getting jaded in my old age, but the only new scifi/genre show I've liked is The Lone Gunmen. I stopped watching Trek after Generation, and the X-Files conspiracy just seemed to bog down and get boring after the movie came out. B5 seemed like bad b-tv the one time I tried it.
The descriptions of the upcoming Smallville series on WB have me retching as a Superman fanatic. I am going to the streets to protest that one...

I've previously sung the praises of The Invisible Man here on MetaFilter so won't do so again, except to mention that it's the sort of show the phrase "rollicking good time" was invented to describe.
I'm also enjoying Dark Angel and Andromeda, both of which have many flaws but are developing in interesting ways nonetheless. Andromedia in particular has things that I've rarely seen in a sci-fi show: space battles without energy beam weapons, an android avatar for the ship's built-in AI, many splinter factions of humans instead of all humans having the same goals and ideals, computer displays that actually look useful. They have an annoying techie character that the other characters actually notice is annoying. Basically, it's Star Trek without all the things that annoy me about Trek. Further, the show has put some of its characters through tribulations that I can only describe as Straczynskian. Also, Lexa Doig is a hottie. (I'd be lying if I said that wasn't one of the reasons I watch. Ditto for Jessica Alba in Dark Angel.)
It seems to me that in the wake of Babylon 5, TV science fiction is undergoing a renaissance of sorts. None of these shows are B5 but they're all better than most of what used to pass as television sci-fi.

Anyone remember VR.5. It came out several years ago, just as the web was starting to really get popular. It started out slowly, but was just getting interesting when they yanked it. That show had potential, dammit!
