If you like mix tapes, Art of the Mix is a must-see site. The site hosts an archive of over 9,000 mix tapes made by music lovers from around the world. You can post your own mixes and contact others for mix tape trades. There's also a discussion forum in which all aspects of making mix tapes are discussed.

Yeah, it's a good site. I contribute there. My biggest problem with the site is the crazy names people give their mixes. I prefer simple names like '20 Great Rock Songs for a Desert Highway'.. but people seem to do stuff like 'Giant Qizzy's Ogfest on the Slow'.. and I'm like.. uhh, what's that about!? That said, it's a nice way to see what songs people associate with others. Type 'dry the rain' into the search, and see what songs people think 'go' with it. Good stuff.

I remember a very funny story in The Onion about a mix tape - you know, where they take the mundane and make it "newsworthy". It was about a girl (or boy?) using a mix tape to describe her (or his?) relationship with a boy (or girl?). It was September/October '99, but dammit, it's not archived! Any help? It was funny, I swear!

I remember it starving, and its funny because my first thought when I read this link was that Rob Gordon from High Fidelity would live at that site, and the onion article you mentioned also made me think of some of the monologues from that flick...

You'd be surprised, Aaron. The mixtape community is alive and well, despite the near-ubiquity of CD-R drives. There are still people who love making and receiving mix tapes. But for people who have embraced the latest technology, Art of the Mix also lets you post mix CD's.

I was in a mix tape group a few years ago. It was great fun. Of course, now I'd do it by e-mailing friends links to MP3 files hosted on my Web site.

a lot of mix tapes, also, are produced by djs. you can find them in some record shops. they're usually quite cheap, and good ways of getting a dj's name out. CD-R's a much more expensive than tapes are, and thus would defeat that purpose.

Actually, if you buy them in fairly large quantities, CD-R's are much LESS expensive than blank tapes. I usually get 100 blank CD-Rs for about $30.
