closest I've come to dying in a mass casualty event was the Tokyo subway sarin gas attack in 1995. I regularly rode those lines to work but later in the morning. So far I've managed to dodge California earthquakes reasonably well, being in the Bay Area for the 1971 quake, in LA for the 1989 Bay Area quake, and Tokyo for the 1994 LA quake . . .

Wow, just last night I was considering using my AskMe to see if there is any way of estimating my chances of dying a non-horrible, non-lingering death. I don't see the exact answer in here, but I can see the chances are not good.
