Awesome information resource for traveling to that part of Mexico. Lovely fantasy material in freezing, rainy December weather in NYC, brrrr.

Always wanted to know the location of "Playa Cacaluta was the filming location for the beach scenes from the award-winning adult movie Y Tu Mamá También, a 2001 Mexican film written by Carlos Cuarón and directed by Alfonso Cuarón." One of my all time favorite movies. A video of the beach. *sigh of bliss

I sooo want to go there!

Cool post, thanks for the enjoyment whiterussian.

Yeah, I used the NWS weather info embedded for Huatulco to see that it is 69 deg. F at 7:00 a.m. It's a balmy 37 here.

I am frankly astonished.

I happened upon this guy's site a few weeks ago before I went to Puerto Escondido over Thanksgiving week. It is a great resource if you're going to be on the Pacific coast of Mexico.

It is an interesting story. My trips to southern Mexico are generally all done by commercial plane and/or nice bus. I'm not a fan of the smaller planes on either side of the border.

Huatulco and Puerto Escondido are great places that are still relatively unspoiled by huge amounts of tourists and mega resorts. Most of the tourists I ran into were European, a few New Zealanders, Canadians and Mexican familes. There are no direct flights from the United States so you have to work a little. Click Mexicana has a daily flight to and from Huatulco and Puerto Escondido from Mexico City. Click is Mexicana Airlines' regional jet brand. The plane I flew on was a newish Fokker 100 with wider seats and a little more legroom than you get in tourist class on a full sized airplane. The staff is nice and they still believe in free cocktail or beer while you're in the air.

It is still rather cheap, you can find a bed in a hostel for about $10 a night. I paid $45 for a nice room with AC across the street from the beach. And I sat at a restaurant or under a palapa drinking beers for about a dollar each and just watch the waves. I already want to go back.

Nice post - I wonder if it was inspired by this recent record-setting flight around the world to raise money for ALS.

CarolAnn Garratt's first trip around the world in her Mooney is documented here.

Very cool. Reminds me of the trip accounts by the X-Plane simulator designer.

ooh birdherder, nice tips. It's good to know there are a few less spoiled corners of the planet to visit. Your trip sounds heavenly. I like the Caribbean Sea, that amazing pale green-blue. But the photos from the OP show lovely bays. The landscape vegetation seems very dry. Was that your experience birdherder?

When I lived in Montreal, It was during a week of -40 weather that I designed the website for a Villa in Huatulco. I remember that doing the 'Photos' section of the site was excruciating. That being said, I have spoken with friends who have been to the area, and they all said this was one of the most wonderful and unspoiled Mexican tourism destinations they have been to, and that the tomzap site was an invaluable guide to the area.

I went to the Club Med there in 1991. It was awfully fun - fond memories. It's a private resort now. Very beautiful scenery and environs.
