My nephews got one of these each yesterday at my parents' house. I couldn't figure out how to get the batteries in :(

At first, I honestly read that as the Nerd fart blaster.

Yes please.

But the ammo belts need to be significantly longer.

It's too bad this came out too late for Weird Al to include the Prius drive-by shooting in the "White & Nerdy" video.

Mess around on that Mana Potions site long enough, and you'll find a reference to:

http://www.harcos-inc.com/contact.html - seems to be the Mana Potions parent company.

Which has a link to a pdf with a bunch of malarky about an anti-cancer partnership with what sounds like a fictional company, Intergen:

http://ingenbio.net/

Looks like a jumping off point for another ARG or something.

...

Yes. Yes it is.

Yeah, we used to do this with those $10 RC cars all the time. 4 AAs? How about 16. They were more tape and battery than car, but man, did they cook.

Sure it does. Hook up 144 NiCads in series, and you'll be amazed at how fast some of that laptop moves.

The next step is to hot glue thumbtacks into the darts' suction cups.

That's how we rolled down south.

I'm not to sure how it started but we all ended up with Nerf guns in our group at work. We have an enclosed office so it works out.
Depending on how you go about 'play' with your Nerf guns it can be really fun, or not so much. The generally unsatisfying part of using a Nerf gun is the scouring the floor for your ammo, and then reloading, all the while someone else walks up and shoots you in the face.
So with all that in mind, the Maverick six shot is your best bet. It has good distance, doesn't break so easily, rarely jams, and has easy reload and fire action.
This gun, Vulcan 25 shot, isn't so bad. We spent some time trying to figure out how to make the belt feed longer than 25 shots, but couldn't see an easy way to do it.
There is also a 20 shot pump action gun from Toys 'R Us that is good fun, and Kay Bee makes a Tommy Nerf Gun.

Looks like you can buy extra ammo belts.
Can't they be hooked together?

I endorse this product and/or service.

Apparently so, since the actual text on the linked page where they talk about the ammo belt says: "The third mod has been done a million times before, but it's worth mentioning. We just clipped two of the 25 round belts together to make a 50 round belt."

pronunciation help - Un-Nerfed? or Uner-Fed?
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 8:37 AM on December 23, 2008

I really miss working in a dotcom. I remember the absurd Nerf wars we would have every so often. Most people had a couple of guns stashed around their desk and occasionally the whole network operations center would go all John Woo and there would be people flying sideways trying to fire a Nerf Pistol in each hand.

One of these would have been awesome back then.

Naturally, this led to a constant arms-race and fueled a powerful need to escalate the level of weaponry, so I once started construction on a modified pump action paintball gun that was going to serve as a power-source for a Nerf(ish) cannon that would fire a one foot length of Noodle (the kids flotation device, basically a 3" across piece of Styrofoam tubing.) I figured it would travel at somewhere around 120 to 150 feet per second and would hit with enough force to knock someone off their feet.

After much consideration and deliberation I decided that this might not be an appropriate office weapon after all. Sadly, it now sits unfinished in my garage.

Ambrosia Voyeur - It's nerfed and un-nerfed, as in "OMG they nerfed the shotty!" (this would probably be because the shotty was a "n00b-cannon").

The belt mod is easy. It just involves unscrewing both belt ends and screwing the two belts together (speaking from experience - I own one).

FWIW (I do NOT work for the company, BTW), the Mana Potions are reasonably tasty and work well, as proven by some mammoth LAN gaming sessions at my soon to be ex-house (yay, foreclosures!)...
posted by Samizdata at 11:31 AM on December 23, 2008

I stand corrected. Apparently, when we pulled the belts apart we didn't look close enough. It's easy enough for 13 year olds to figure out though.
