Clean Coal Kills!

I caught this on the InterNet and looked at TV news for details. There was no coverage. So, from the Net: an earthen dam holding back many many tons of coal dust sludge has burst, releasing 5.4M cubic yards of toxic waste onto the Tennessee landscape. Another story. This is a bigger environmental disaster than the Exxon Valdez. Or so the record-keepers say. It happened before and killed at least 124 people outright. The long term effects of coal dust are nasty. Answers to your questions inside:
Excellent overview.
What is coal dust slurry?
Where does it come from? More.
Who else is in danger?
Isn't this illegal (like under the Clean Water Act? Scroll down.)
Who's doing something?
What about clean coal? More.

jimbob: you're right. I wasn't monitoring MeFi Boxing Day, I guess, and none of my links turned up doubles on preview. The powers that be can decide whether to dump the Post or not
