Well, I found Forvo through the Underrated Websites link and that's pretty interesting. Here's their mission statement: "Forvo is the place where you´ll find words pronounced in their original languages. Ever wondered how a word is pronounced? Ask for that word or name, and another user will pronounce it for you. You can also help others recording your pronunciations in your own language." Cool stuff, if still in the larval stage.

There's a Gary Larson cartoon about this where the man is saying "social media, community websites, twitter aggregation, leveraging the masses, networking, user-created content, etc" but all the social media consultant hears him say is "sign up to metafilter and link client's product, sign up to metafilter and link client's product, sign up to metafilter and...".

Thanks for reminding me about Forvo, I remember hearing something about it and never bookmarking/exploring and wish I had, although in the interim I've found wikitionary which generally has pronunciations.

I am still trying to learn this stuff. This is all new to me. I am still trying to understand twitter. I feel like a dummie at this point. Will learn it all soon. Could someone please explain why anyone would use Twitter? It seems like basically a blog service but with a word limit that's so restrictive that it's awkward to do links. Or like IM without the spontaneity. Or like Facebook's status updates without Facebook. So, it's like a severely limited version of a bunch of other social media, with nothing extra to compensate? What's the point?

Twitter is social sushi. Part of the pleasure is the small portion. Quite astonishingly, Twitter was an incredible real time, ongoing reporting tool during the Mumbai attacks.
