I downloaded the Grey Album to see what all the ruckus was about and realized what the problem was: Although it was a mashup, it was a mashup with Jay-Z songs. Club rap makes me want to rip my ears out. That said, I'm going to be generous and give this a try.

Almost 5 years after the original Black Album, who'da thunk people were still mashing this one up? Oh, the nostalgia. To this day, some of the White Album tracks make me think of the the Grey Album mashups more than the originals. I'll assume dunkadunc is referring to hip-hop you'd hear in clubs, vs that of undie rap (I just found out about that term ... does any one really call it Undie?) More (frightening) mash-ups: Jay-Zeezer, and a whole lot more. That 2nd link is a collection of a LOT of remix albums, but it was last updated in 2005. Lots of dead links. Sadly, no quick link to Kenny-Z Album - Jay-Z vs Kenny G.

I like both artists, enjoyed the Grey Album, and am enjoying this. Well I'm a fan of both Jay Z and Nirvana, but still have no interest in hearing 'The Black Album Unplugged - JayZ vs. Nirvana' by DJ Noodles ...... *shudders* The problem for me is similar to what filthy light thief said - mashups can have the power to permanently alter how you hear certain music, and that unplugged album is one I don't ever want to ruin. (btw - I thought the Grey Album was great aside from some of the production issues). However, anyone have a working link to download The Slack Album? The previous metafilter post couldn't help and my pirate bay searches are coming up empty.

I don't know about this. It's great in theory, and has some really great moments, but Minty Fresh seems to constantly feel the need to make sure you know he's there with all of these little stutters and whatnot, which I think are really unnecessary overall. I'm in the camp that a DJ should try and seem invisible as possible when doing a mashup -- it should seem as if these songs were made for each other, as if putting together these songs was completely and totally effortless, but putting all of these little 'DJ tricks' that were not in the original vocal track just (to me) screams "I'm the DJ that did this and I did this, it was a DJ who did this DON'T FORGET THAT IT WAS I, A DJ, WHO MADE THIS MASHUP." And that seems wrong somehow. see: This other Jay-z mashup for an example of a really good 'invisible DJ' situation. Ps: I'm not talking about chopping up the song to make the beat work. I think that's fair game and really sort of encouraged in the process, I'm more talking about the totally unnecessary chop-up-reverb-thing on the vocal track at the beginning of '99 Anthems," for example.

Wow. Rap has got so bad that people think an artist as potently talented as Jay-Z sucks?!! Whoa. Jay-Z is one of the all-time best ever. He's up there with LL Cool J (see Radio). This is what I want from an artist who raps: Timely unlimited greatness. And with Jay-Z, that's what I feel is being delivered. For instance: 99 Problems. With Rick Rubin. Rick Rubin. Rick Rubin (thankfully) put his hand to hip-hop again. And he chose to do it with Jay-Z. End of argument.

Gotta say, just not feeling this one. I mean its not terrible, but you listen to something like The Grey Album and the way Danger Mouse samples and chops those beats up has real style, and it sounded original upon its release. As far this one goes, if you listen to the 15 Step mash it's almost like he didn't feel like trying to fit the different time signatures, and just decimated the verse of the Radiohead song into 4/4. As for the stutters and 'dj tricks', I think they're good and well, for without them the beats would be utterly soulless, but overall, an uncreative disappointment. I am judging it to the standards of The Grey Album and the like though, and compared to the other Radiohead tributes out on the web, it's not too shabby and has its moments for a guy with a myspace page like that, posing with Ad-Rock. I rate it somewhere below Radiodread, somehwat on par with Rodeohead and probably a little better than Skeet Spirit: A Crunk Tribute to Radiohead.

I generally don't even check the links anymore when someone mentions mashup, because it isn't. Seriously think about it for a second, what is mashup describing? Because we've all heard DJ's mix music before, right? If you've heard a good DJ then you've heard them take very disparate music and put it together and all they were doing was mixing. But now that the term "mashup" has entered the common lexicon of hipsters everywhere, everything is a mashup. So now that term has stopped being descriptive, lost it's original intent, and is just an overused verb. Meh. (Does anybody else want some of these bitter cookies?)

I do want to say this is a great post. This music is good and people should give it a listen, and I fully support any kind of art. I don't want to keep my ridiculous argument going but in reply to Hat Maui: This guy never refers to himself as a mashup artist, nor does he refer to what he did as a mashup. Also, the Grey Album was put together by a DJ wasn't it? I found a video of him making a beat.
