Yeah I'm going to have to err on the side of not being all that impressed by this. I mean it's a neat idea and just sort of fun, but I could do photoshop that well. ... that means it's not wowing me. ... I like photoshop posts to be in the wow ballpark.

I have yet to determine what is necessary to prevent snark on Metafilter. Maybe something about cute kittens voting for Barak Obama might do it, but even then It'd have to be well-crafted. This post is just sort of mediocre, which a lot of Metafilter users take as a personal affront. If it makes you feel better, imagine how awesome the artist will feel when he finds out his stuff got linked here. Probably a little less awesome when he goes to show his friends and finds it's deleted with the reason: "Meh"

Well, at least it wasn't about I/P, newsfilter, or Joe the Plumber, so I consider it a victory. When I was younger, the giant fish that tries to eat Mario scared me. Oh, yeah, and that sun that swoops down from the sky too. I hate things that wait to get me in video games that I have to outrun.

You know how in the green it says "Wisecracks don't help people find answers." Well, I think the principle sort of carries over to the blue where being super harsh and mocking doesn't help first time posters understand how to make better posts and be better contributers in the future. Don't get me wrong, I don't want a hug and a mug of hot chocolate for posting something shitty. By all means, call me out. But being a bunch of jerks and offering little in the way of constructive feedback is just mean for the sake of being mean. Okay, I'm good. You're now free to snark at this comment. Peace!

I think this is one of those tough situations where posting constructive feedback isn't easy to do. This is because I believe Metafilter doesn't actually know for sure what a good post is. That's not an insult. Metafilter has so many people that you can't make generalizations as to who think what's going to be good. For example, variations on lolcats get posted over and over again, but you've got equal amounts snark and "aww, I love those cats are so funny!" Who knows why? Our fellow MeFites believe the art in your post is isn't up to par/original/novel/something they could do themselves (but don't for some reason). They're trashing it, and that means they're going to direct some vehemence at you for posting it in the first place. Totally not the fault of the construction of the post. But then what, if any advice, is there to give outside of some arbitrary "don't post stuff that sucks"? All I can think of is this: if you're posting something as specific and common as video game art, that you dig through the archives and see what sort of stuff has been previously posted. There's some rather interesting recontextualizations/retellings of Mario done already. I know his gallery covers other games, but I'm just using these as examples of video game art posts that Metafilter seemed to like. I suspect that MeFi isn't too amenable to things presented via DeviantArt... another possibility would be to find out if the artist has an alternative, more personal web presence and include that. For full reassurances, you can run it by another member via MeMail. A quick, "hey, do you think this would be a good front page post?" should be fine. Personally, I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't snark if you don't care for the post. I see you've mostly been on the Green. The Blue is somewhat different in that people aren't primed to be helpful right off the bat. Fortunately you haven't flamed out or anything like that. I'm weary of saying this with my single FPP and meager 266 comments in the Blue, but welcome to a brave new frontier.

I thought it wasn't all that great. That being said there's always haters, Rudy. I posted a video about a rat that sat on a cat that sat on a dog and they all walked around downtown Santa barbara (there may have been a duck too) and that got tons of hate. And it was totally awesome!!
