The natural beauty of the planet never ceases to amaze me. I really hope I get to see this one day in person.

There were not a lot of upsides to living through five northern Alberta winters, but occasional displays like these were one of the biggest ones. There'd be tinges of orange and red sometimes among the ribbons of green and purple. Fireworks displays always seem kind of overrated when your childhood includes this kind of sky.

I hate to say it but, what those videos really need is a Coldplay song.

The one time I got to see the Northern Lights from my suburban viewpoint, I was babysitting a friend who had taken mushrooms. Fortuitous, in that I was able to focus his attention on something, and that I was able to experience something psychedelic, too.

Great videos.

You know how sometimes you look up at the night sky full of stars and feel really small? Well, for me, auroras make me feel better about being so small. They awe me, and for a few moments I feel more a part of the universe at being able to witness such things. There are times when I like being awed.

i watched them as part of a cannery worker crowd, late at night, end of september 1989, in valdez, AK. Sometimes the ribbons would sort of twist in on themselves and seemingly explode across the entire sky and everyone would gasp, then cheer, even people who had lived up north all of their lives. these timelapse movies capture it perfectly.

I swear that the Northern Lights were hiding from me when I was living in Iceland, I only saw them a few times and never to the full extent pictured here, but each time it was still otherworldly beautiful and magical. Certainly a welcome sight in a world with only four hours of daylight. Something's gotta make up for it.
