I'd always wondered what cats were. Now, thanks to Look at This Cat! I know they're nature's way of saying, "Hey, cats!" posted by Caduceus at 8:17 PM on February 3, 2009 [1 favorite]

I wish I could just give you my "cats" tag on flickr and let you just pull them in via the API or something, because then this would be a firehose of awesome. posted by mathowie at 8:24 PM on February 3, 2009
Server issues aside, the last few days have been pretty cool around here. Microsoft Songsmith remixes, a Guns N Roses member writing a financial column, and now I discover via this site the greatest cat name even: Boutros Boutros Kitty.
Pretty awesome, though I get the feeling that they will be getting a lot more emails soon. Not that that's a bad thing. posted by schyler523 at 8:27 PM on February 3, 2009

I just showed my cat photos of herself on the internet. She was not impressed, and claims that she is in fact still the greatest, even if you don't vote for her. posted by gingerbeer at 9:08 PM on February 3, 2009 [1 favorite]

Even though it subverts somewhat the zero-functionality design aesthetic I'm going for, I think I'll have to implement some sort of Kitty Index in the next couple of days to help people out here. "Reload until you find your cat" won't really scale that well.
Also, I'm probably gonna do cat uploads like twice a day in batches, and I have other obligations tonight, so tomorrow morning is going to be like catpocalypse judging by my inbox. posted by cortex at 10:20 PM on February 3, 2009
The first cat I got was submitted by Jessamyn. I think I need to go find some cats to photograph. posted by cmgonzalez at 10:37 PM on February 3, 2009
This will be perfect when selecting the great button doesn't lead you to the next cat but to a screen with that .gif of the "this page is under construction" guy and the words HE DIGS AND DIGS BUT HE WILL NEVER FIND YOUR SOUL. I don't care what you bitchsticks click, every cat is the greatest. posted by melissa may at 10:40 PM on February 3, 2009 [1 favorite]

I've been cheating and clicking every cat as the greatest. Well, ok, at first I clicked great a couple of times but then I realized that all cats are the greatest at something. I don't know what that something is but they do so who am I to judge? posted by robtf3 at 12:56 AM on February 4, 2009 [2 favorites]
My own cat is now looking at ME and judging me for looking at other cats. She's a very jealous mistress.
Clearly, I must submit her pictures when I get home from work so that she can see that she's THE GREATEST cat. posted by grapefruitmoon at 4:16 AM on February 4, 2009

Monkey vs. Robot is a classic. Thanks for reminding me of it. Back in university I had it in my shared folder on the residence network and it became a cult hit around campus with people quoting it and having mock monkey vs. robot fights. posted by Space Coyote at 9:12 AM on February 4, 2009
Oh man, last night I accidentally sent cortex a picture of some robots instead of my cat, but I had no idea.
We had a series of emails where he's all "dude, I don't think that's your cat" and I'm all "WTF? Look at him here in my flickr doing cat stuff!! Of course it's my cat" and he's all "dude, you sent me robots." Oops! posted by exogenous at 9:23 AM on February 4, 2009 [1 favorite]

I've got bad news for cortex. Apparently, his web strategy is so golden that a MAJOR MEDIA ENTITY is moving in on it. Time Inc. in partnership with CNN presents PeoplePets.com. It's a little dog-dominant, but I suspect that's a result of some serious market research. posted by wendell at 10:48 AM on February 4, 2009

Do you have some kind of automated upload system? Or are you doing them one at a time? Because I sent you 253 cat photos. posted by shelleycat at 11:55 AM on February 4, 2009 [2 favorites]
It's manual at this point. I am not going to upload all 253 of your pictures, fwiw, though I am impressed that you managed to deliver that many to me.

Heh, and that was the pared down list of just the good ones! I didn't expect you to upload them all but at least you've got a bunch to choose from. I was actually fun going through all my old photos, I haven't looked at some of them for years. And it's fun looking at other people's cats too.
