By about 30 seconds in, the words lose all meaning. I can't imagine watching the whole 27 minutes. But I'm still glad it exists.

How incredibly tedious. And I love that show. It's only tripe if you are watching it for the swearing and the violence. Sopranos, unlike Deadwood, is full of brilliant writing and acting.

The Deadwood video works up a really hypnotic rhythm after a while. It's like dozing off listening to the rhythm of a train's wheels.

As much as I regret my time management choices sometimes, I am not going to watch a half hour montage of 'fuck' and 'shit'.

Instead I switched over to the same dude's lil'er anthropology clips from the Vimeo sidebar and lol'ed.

The word expletive comes from late Latin expletivus, meaning to fill out. It was introduced into English to refer to various kinds of padding in writing, adding syllables to poetry, filling out books with unnecessary material, etc. Modern linguistic usage describes a word that fills a syntactic vacancy such as using "it" as a dummy subject when the subject is inferred. A more generic definition is any word or phrase that contributes nothing to the meaning of a sentence, which some prudes have taken to mean obscenities. It could be speciously reasoned that The Sopranos is nothing but a vehicle for titillating obscenity and the non-obscene dialogue is only there to fill out the show for time. Therefore,

[expletive deleted].

I never noticed that the woman hardly swear at all.

This really works as a pared-down version of the violent narrative, which is, I'll grant you, a large chunk of the narrative. I love it.

I'm obsessed with the Sopranos and everything I saw in Philly for a year was incorporated into my Soprano-world. And fuck no, I didn't fuckin watch the whole fuckin thing, dildo.

Dude, people have been saying 'fuck' on network television in the UK since Kenneth Tynan popped one out in 1965. I can assure you that, by this stage, we *aren't* tittilated by the swearing.

But here's what I don't get: if the swearing bothers you so much, how did you manage to sit through a full season? And if you *didn't* sit through a full season -- or even a full episode, how can you possibly characterize it as 'tripe'?

Also: The Canterbury Tales is such tripe. I am convinced people have only been reading it since the 14th Century because of the swearing.

The cussing in Deadwood had a specific purpose though, in that if he had used actual realistic period dialogue it would have sounded so tame by modern standards that probably nobody would have realized that they were being extremely vulgar.

Just for everyone's information, it takes 58 seconds of cursing before you hear a woman.
posted by BuddhaInABucket at 11:37 PM on February 9, 2009

I'm not sure how seriously I'm supposed to take the comments about the cursing, since Shakespeare himself was really fond of low humor. In Twelfth Night, he makes a cunt joke, for God's sake.

Anyway, not that anyone has to like the things I like--and my God, do I like Deadwood--but that show was deliberately Shakespearean in all the best ways. The heightened language (yes, including all the naughtiness, which was frequently hilarious), the meticulous examination of character, the use of soliloquy--remember E.B.'s delivery into a mud puddle, or Al holding forth while getting an inept blow job? Who does that any more? Who does it well?

It always kills me when people get het up about using "Shakesperean" as an adjective. It doesn't mean "just as good as Shakespeare" any more than "Beatlesque" connotes "right up there with Lennon/McCartney."

Rant over. Not even really the right thread to dump in, but hey, it's Metafilter. You cocksuckers.

A.W. Merrick: It was gunfire, and it came from your saloon.

Al Swearengen: Has not the press a duty, Merrick, qualifying its accounts in time of war?

A.W. Merrick: Are we at war now here in the camp? Has that fact been suppressed as well? Absent formal declaration, Al, information which affects this community is not my prerogative to disseminate. To do so is my sacred responsibility.

Al Swearengen: Whores currently disseminating a dose, for example?

A.W. Merrick: To inform within decency’s limits. We’ve had this discussion before.

Al Swearengen: Citizens better die postulating than touch indecent ink.

This is not tripe.

Sorry, here's more:

E.B. Farnum: Could you have been born, Richardson? And not egg-hatched as I've always assumed? Did your mother hover over you, snaggle-toothed and doting as you now hover over me?

Richardson: I loved my mother.

E.B. Farnum: Puberty may bring you to understand, what we take for mother love is really murderous hatred and a desire for revenge.

Richardson: Will you give your speech to be Mayor tonight?

E.B. Farnum: Whatever night I give it, count on me not to mince words. 'Electors of the camp, as to who should serve as Mayor reasonable men may differ, but as to who should be Sheriff we all ought speak with one voice and our words should be turn out the maniac Bullock, who set upon the Mayor unprovoked, who beat him with merciless protraction. Bulllock should be murdered! We should rise up and murder Bullock! Thank you very much.'

Richardson: My father didn't liked me.

E.B. Farnum: I'd like to use your ointment to suffocate you.

*** SPOILER ALERT *** (to the montage, not The Sopranos):

I did not hear the words "So... what? no fucking ziti?!" Nor did I notice Anthony Jr's utterance it of at least the word "fucking" in the many minutes I watched of it.

Also notably absent, "that's dicked up!"

Somewhere around/between 1:30 and 3:00 into the video: "I Love You" is a swear.

The creator of this video purposefully cut it up so as to not spoil the sopranos for you. You'll see somethings from later seasons early on in the video, and somethings for the first seasons later on in the video. It is not straight-thru.
