ArtFilter- Amazingly realistic driftwood sculptures of horses.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Pretty much done before; with art-related posts, it's not a bad idea to try and track the work down to the actual artist(s) involved anyway to avoid encouraging these scrape-and-don't-credit middleman things when possible. -- cortex

Couldn't you have taken the extra step of googling "driftwood horses" and using a link to the actual artist, rather than a bunch of unattributed photos on some "tween" author's blog entry?

And there are other artists doing very similar sculptures, as well, not to mention the thousands working with driftwood.

It's like the 70s in my mouth and everybody is wearing lapels.

One of the the beautiful things about Metafilter, are the contributions by the commentors! Pieces of detritus form a singular, wonderful, whole thread.

They are very realistic and well done and must have taken quite a bit of time to create. That being said, I can't look at them without thinking "those things look like they're made of turds!".

I apologize.

The National Geographic store on Regent St in London has some like these in the window. Don't know if they're by the same artist, but worth a look if you're walking by. The horses, that is, not the shop.

I'm not quite sure why but these things seriously creeped me out. They look just realistic enough but still somehow profoundly off enough to be troublesome; like something the antagonist of a bad dream would ride. Don't get me wrong the craftsmanship is remarkable but the driftwood just looks too skeletal for me to be at ease with these.

+1 bango. I think it's something to do with the life-sized-ness.

This post is a disaster. Not only does it not link to the artist, and not only is the artist copying a better artist (see forktine), but the entire post is a double, or would be if the blogger had bothered to figure out who the artist was. Fail, fail, fail.

I've seen some of these in real life (the artist Forktine links to lives near me) and I have to admit the turd thing never really occurred to me. It always surprises me how much the driftwood mimics the curves of the horses, but at the same time there is something quite discomforting about them.

Too much attempt at realism. I like Butterfield much better. Her piece in the entry of Stanford's Cantor Museum always leaves me breathless...and I'm not a "horse person."

You know, instead of railing on the poster, you could just flag the post...just a thought.
