I'm On a Boat, Featuring T-pain (NSFWork or Landlubbers)
...is the latest video from the new album by Incredibad who is Lonely Island. "A slew of "real" musicians will join Samberg on the album, including T-Pain, Norah Jones, Jack Black, E-40, the Strokes' frontman Julian Casablancas and Justin Timberlake."
As someone who still watches the video for "Jizz In My Pants" almost daily, and is probably responsible for most of its views, I have to say that this one was a disappointment. posted by Chan at 3:05 PM on February 10
I liked the story behind the song. Sorry Jorma, someone has to be left behind. posted by filthy light thief at 3:19 PM on February 10
You know, I can't hate on that. I know musicians snarl at me and rage when I say I like aural sugary candy, but T-Pain's whole vocoder pitch-alignment melody chrous thing really does work for me.
Album better have Dick in a Box, tho. posted by cavalier at 3:27 PM on February 10

I don't know, I have a hard time faulting anything that contains the line "Take a good hard look at the motherfucking boat." posted by Caduceus at 3:39 PM on February 10 [2 favorites]
Does Samberg have a birthday coming up? Maybe we could all chip in to buy him a new bit; this one is pretty fucking threadbare. posted by uncleozzy at 3:47 PM on February 10

This was funny once, the NP rap maybe 3 or 4 times. posted by fistynuts at 3:57 PM on February 10
Truly, there are now three great days in the life of a boat-owner.
The day you buy the boat, the day you sell the boat, and the day you annoy the ever loving shit out of your friends/passersby with this song.
It does. There was a quick ad for the album during SNL.
And damn, they keep getting funnier for me... posted by AloneOssifer at 4:26 PM on February 10

That would have been great if it had stopped at the one minute mark. Then it could have been a parody of people who still think it's funny to parody rap like this. Instead it was Weird Al redux.
The Lonely Island are pretty much the only group of Satirsts that get conventions of the music they're making fun of. I'm on a boat fucking nails it it sounds so similar but the lyrics are firmly toungue in cheek. Another one I really like is Sax Man. Spot on. posted by Rubbstone at 4:55 PM on February 10

Oh wow, that Natalie Porman rap is actually genuinely good... posted by Hermione Dies at 5:03 PM on February 10
Ya know. It's well done, but almost too well done. Like, if this was released by a major hip-hop star, it could just about pass. It's not quite vacuous enough to overcome the vacuity of the style it's supposed to be satirizing.
Which is to say, I didn't think it was funny. posted by rusty at 5:05 PM on February 10

It really seems to me what they're doing is making a funny song in a particular style, not making fun of the style itself. posted by setanor at 5:05 PM on February 10
Y'alls nuthin but a lanky-ass Yankovic, motherfucker.
Lankier than Yankovic? That can't be good for the bowels. posted by setanor at 5:06 PM on February 10
Didn't Nelly (or someone else) do something in earnest that was all about sneakers--like, five years ago? This would have been funny back then, or in Yacht Rap's late-90's heyday. Now? Meh. posted by Sys Rq at 5:15 PM on February 10

I love Jorma (seriously, have you seen Hot Rod? -- awesome). I wish he was a regular cast member on SNL instead of just a writer. Actually, in my ideal SNL world, they'd drop Casey Wilson and replace her with Jorma. I would Tivo that shit. posted by the littlest brussels sprout at 5:44 PM on February 10
I think it's pretty hard to beat sinking a line like "I got a nautical-themed pashmina afghan" into a song. So this pretty much gets win from me. posted by six-or-six-thirty at 7:03 PM on February 10
Haters can bite me - The Lonley Island is still funny. To quote everyone on FARK when I dare ridicule their pantheon of gods: let's see you do better. C'mon, big boy - the challenge is laid down. posted by cerulgalactus at 7:06 PM on February 10 [1 favorite]

Weird Al never got T-Pain to make fun of himself. The punchline is involving legitimate big-name artists (like Justin Timberlake) and making it stupider fun. posted by hypersloth at 9:06 PM on February 10

You know, this song really isn't without a little hidden beauty. It is something, after all, to be on a boat!
Unfortunately, I will never have occasion to sing this song ON a boat, as my experiences with boats have been all about taking a good hard look at my stomach contents.
So, I'll just be singing "I'm on a boat!" even though I am not, in fact, anywhere near a boat. posted by grapefruitmoon at 2:59 AM on February 11
