Thank you for this. I've been a fan for a long time but rarely come across others who know about them.

Yay for this post! I love the Innocence Mission also - Karen Peris is fantastic.

Birds of My Neighborhood is a gorgeous, gorgeous record.

Huh. I haven't thought of this band in probably more than a decade or more. And, strangely, when I try and think of their music, it gets all messed up with the Cranberries in my mind.

Thanks for posting.

Hooray! "Umbrella" was one of the first CDs I ever bought, and I was always a little surprised and sad that their music never quite caught on. I've been slowly catching up on them via eMusic when I can.

Yup, me too. I saw this band open up for Emmylou Harris in Portland around 1995. That was a lovely little show.

Thanks for this! The Innocence Mission has been a favorite of mine for a while.

In the 70's I would carry my Joni Mitchell albums to parties.
In the 90's I would give The Innocence Missions' Umbrella out as gifts. Ah! Sweet music.

Oh, I bet that was wonderful. I'm really glad I was turned on to their music (via Lipstick Thespian).

That first video is a bit of a shock to someone who's only heard Befriended.

I didn't know anyone still remembered The Innocence Mission. Their first two albums have been out of print for years. I don't know why anyone has pushed to get them released online.

Around about the same time their debut album came out the Ocean Blue's debut came out. I remember MTV pairing their videos together (though the Ocean Blue was from Hershey, not Lancaster), with "Between Something And Nothing" coming after "I Remember Me."

Also, on watching the first video, I love how transparent Paul Shafer is on the Letterman Show when there's a band on that he likes (For example, his fawning over the awesome Robert Randolph). He must have really liked The Innocence Mission to actually sit in with them. It warms my heart to see that sort of genuineness on television.

Also, it's amazing to hear a band sound that much like U2 without, you know, sucking like U2.

I listen to Innocence Mission all the time; literally, I don't think much more than a week passes. I was surprised there was no FPP until now. There are plenty more YouTube videos, including a 3-part performance/interview TV show (start here) which I did not include in the post due to its dubious quality and less-than flattering sound. Interesting nonetheless though. There is also a video of the PS22 choir singing There, which is extremely charming.

Also - Funny Skinner - if you like the Innocence Mission, you might like Cranes, also:

Thanks! That's pretty cool!

It's strange that iTunes is missing the first album, and Umbrella, plus Birds of My Neighborhood, which I don't think is out of print. I'm sure there is some kind of front-end expense to get them on iTunes, but surely it can't be prohibitive. I wonder if there is some wacky record label rights issue holding things up.

The order of the videos in the FPP represents their musical evolution. I like the acoustic stuff they do now, but I would do a backflip for joy (after some training) if they came out with something more akin to Glow or the debut album again.

Also, it's amazing to hear a band sound that much like U2 without, you know, sucking like U2.

As a long-time fan of both U2 and IM (so I disagree with the "sucking" aspect), I am shocked that I never, ever, ever, saw the similarity until a YouTube comment in the first link mentioned it. Now, it's obvious. That shimmering guitar chord progression is really similar to Pride.

Yay Innocence Mission. Will move over to my ipod immediately. Thanks for the reminder. It's been way too long.

Also thanks for the motivation to work on that Fetchin Bones fpp I keep putting off.

Lancaster Catholic High School alumni to be exact...

Wow, dw! We probably went to high school within at least 50 miles of each other. Bret Michaels of Poison went to my high school, I went to grade school with Amy Farina of the Evens, and Live once played a dance at my high school, when they were still a New Wave act called Public Affection. By the way, do you remember Suddenly, Tammy!?

So many beautiful recordings, and yet so little video. Sad, because the video for "Bright As Yellow" is one of those rare ones that looks exactly the way I thought the song sounded.

A studio performance of Away in a Manger

YouTube is filled with covers, some better than others. In this one, Sufjan Stevens climbs onto a rooftop and plays a banjo cover of The Lakes of Canada.

The fanvids can be pretty impressive as well.

Ohhhh man. Love this band. Happy Birthday and Into Brooklyn, Early in the Morning are favorites of mine, though nothing really comes close to Lakes of Canada, one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Here's Sufjan Stevens doing a cover, if anyone's interested in that kind of thing.

iTunes did have Birds of My Neighborhood once upon a time, given that my copy of "Lakes of Canada" is an m4p file. It appears to be out of print on Amazon, but looks like you can order it direct from the record company.

Not unless you grew up in northeastern Oklahoma. :) MTV -- particularly 120 Minutes -- was our musical lifeline in the late 80s.

120 Minutes sure was something. I grew up in the suburbs of Harrisburg, PA, and I had no idea 120 Minutes was on the verge of creating a Hershey/Lancaster music scene.

By the way, you should check out this suddenly, tammy! video of Hard Lesson, a fine Lancaster, PA band which was "rockin' the piano" before Ben Folds Five was doing it.
