SXSW 2009 music

If you're interested in the bands playing at SXSW this year, you have more to draw on than the blurbs in the schedule. First, the 2009 collection of mp3s from showcased bands is up - like last year, as unofficial fanmade torrents - offering samples of a thousand bands in five gigabytes. Second, there's Paul's SXSW Artist Catalog, an excellent catalog of artists. It provides links to Last.fm & Youtube for each artist, & many tags to follow sounds you like. (Previously: my 2008 post, & 2007.)

I'm just a fan of their music selection, by the way - I love digging through the sampler for new bands.

more proof punk's dead (I wanted to like them, but the music on their myspace was such a cliché I couldn't bear it).

Thanks for the link to the torrents. I went last year with a buddy of mine. We didn't have tickets, but we got into most shows we wanted. It was just non-stop music for a week. It was great. We saw lots of great shows that were not official SXSW but were free and a bit off of the beaten path, like the Other Music Lawn Party at the French Legation Museum.

Is that guy who reviews every single band in six words going to do it again? I hope so.

Hm that Care Bears on Fire band sound like the Donnas.

While we're on SXSW, don't forget MeFi's own chime made a gnarly interactive calender for the event. (Which doesn't seem to be up for 2009 yet, actually.)

Care Bears, Amusement Parks and Arcades... Is this a new generation of arsonists or just alluding to the great fire sale of the 21st century? Everything must go, including the care bears.

Then it's not just a clever name.

"You can love Neko Case too much."

Um, no, you can't.

What I most vividly remember about SXSW while living in Austin was the collective countdown to it being over.

Punk's been dead for 20 years then.

I thought there was a more official individual set of downloads for people who are scared of torrents?

Oh yes, if you just go to individual pages you can download songs directly.

Um, no, you can't.

Amen. Her last is about as perfect as I've heard an album.

And there's going to be an Austin Meetup then. You don't even have to leave metafilter behind when traveling.

The unofficial torrent and SCHED make my SXSW. Thank you, chime, and thank you, Pronoiac.

Tickets are $325 to $1145. I'm kind of surprised no one has a problem with this.

Considering some concerts can run $100+ face value, and this gets you music for a week?
