This is that one arty kid in your fifth grade class that nobody understood. He was great at drawing things like baby chicks and battleships, but sucked at basic math. He always smelled vaguely like he had crapped his pants. One time you saw his mom pick him up from school, and she looked old enough to be his grandmother. As they got into their woody wagon and drove off, you think you saw his face through the dirty window, frozen in a rictus of "oh God, not home again" terror. The next day, he drew this amazing picture of a flying car.

There was nothing remotely fashionista about thongs back then. In California in the '60s we called them zoris, probably because that is what the Japanese called them.
