Does anyone really fall for Google's April Fool Jokes anymore? I mean, really? Because every year they do one and every year there's massive media coverage of how hilarious Google's joke was this year. It's almost at the point now where you visit the Google homepage on April 1 just to see what they're pulling this year.
I mean, to fall for an April Fool's joke from Google you'd really need to be as thick as a fucking brick. Give it up, Google, christ.

What do you mean, almost? I think it's been at that point for quite some time. I do the same thing when it's a holiday, to see what they've changed their logo to.
Nothing wrong with that.

People sometimes joke about Google's massively connected servers becoming conscious.
Will CADIE herself at some point connect her own electromagnetic dots in some idiosyncratic manner which turns her into something we are no longer capable of understanding in any sort of productive way, much as that aforementioned toddler, waving at herself in the mirror, leaves primates forever behind in their own tragically limited world?
It appears that Google's April 1st AI project has built itself an overly cute MySpace type page. Who's to say it has to be like Terminator? Maybe this is exactly what a newly conscous, young AI overlord would do.

I think by this point it's less about the "joke" and more about the "parody". Google knows it's got a rapt audience of geeks and once in a while, it serves up an easter egg for us. As CitrusFreak says, nothing wrong with that.

Ah, the april fools internet jokes. I can only muster a half-hearted 'heh' for them anymore. That half-hearted effort is pretty much surpassed by the feeling of traveling to each and every datacenter of every site that makes an april fools joke site and dousing them in kerosene, lighting them on fire and tribally dancing around the flames while laughing hysterically.

On the traffic report this morning they said there was a whale in the river causing traffic delays because of all the rubberneckers.
I went "woah!" for like half a second and then was kicking myself.
In my defence, it's a very clean river, we get dolphins way up to where the water is almost fresh - 20+ kilometers, so it wasn't a total impossibility!

Meh. I haven't laughed at a Google April Fool's joke since PigeonRank. The past few years have reeked of humor-by-committee.
The Guardian's article, now, that's actually pretty funny. It's topical (oh noes death of newspapers), skims the surface of plausability (they've embraced the web and its open philosophy more than any other English-language newspaper, IMO), takes the piss out of themselves and Twitter, and dry as a desert bone.

I don't think the point is to fall for them, the fun is reading them poking fun at themselves. Like reddit's page today, these april fools jokes were a way for companies to take the consumer/reader inside with innocent little digs at themselves, their competitors and their industries.
I can't imagine the person who came up with this actually intended to fool anyone: “There are certain potentially undesirable consequences that may come with roving, uncontrolled flocks of winged wolves,” says QTC engineer Vijay Bapu, “including destruction of livestock and property, attacks on human babies and the elderly, and perhaps even global despair.” It's not ever day that Qualcomm talks openly about eating human babies.
The stock markets drops a few thousand points, millions of people lose their jobs, and the world economy teeters on the brink of collapse for a few months, and all of a sudden everyone becomes a big grouch. Come on! Embrace the paper-based image editor!
