That looks like a woman's fur coat Slick Rick is wearing. Who needs a flaming garbage can when you've got a woman's fur coat to keep you warm anyway?

That looks like a woman's fur coat Slick Rick is wearing.

Hey, when you release a record as great as The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, you can wear whatever the hell you want. He could rap in a clown suit and it still wouldn't take away from the fact that he wrote "Children's Story".

Isn't that the point? He doesn't need the flaming garbage cans, but he's got them anyway. That's straight pimpin'.

I got on the wrong subway, I'd gone way off course, and decided I'd better just jump out and grab a cab. Emerging at street level, there they were: burning garbage cans, and gruff men with gloves that have the finger tips cut off. Wow, this must be that place, I thought.

Burning garbage cans are inversely correlated with available taxis, by the way.

Keep in mind the majority of these videos (are really old and) were directed by (white) people who had no idea about what the hell they were trying to convey. They just wanted it to look cool, or their idea of what they thought was cool. If you look you can see a number of these videos shot were of groups or rappers that resided in Los Angeles. Last I checked, starting a fire to keep warm in LA would be rather redundant.
I think this would be a lot more interesting if you cross-refernced the appearance of some of these props (like guns, kind of clothing, jewelry) to popularity of certain styles or people. You could also do this with any genre.

That would be interesting, otherwise color me unimpressed

In one way its self-explanatory (what it is); in another, it is totally unself-explanatory (why the hell they bothered)
