Hmm, really? The title seemed more biased than the rest of the article. The article seemed to give a well-researched and interesting background. Personally, it gave me a bit of perspective/context for the Americans with Disabilities Act and its effects in the United States.

It was interesting, certainly, to learn about the situation of disabled people in Argentina. It certainly sounds like Argentina could use, among other things, a stronger OSHA-type agency, and increased possibilities for people injured on the job to receive compensation from their employers. It got a little silly when the article veered into theoretical territory: Thus, with the development of capitalism, we witness the emergence of a population in which poverty and disability converge. Emergence? So it was different before? This, and the paragraph it is in, I can't make head nor tail of: The twofold movement of exclusion and expulsion positions disability as a condition of non-exploitation or, on occasion, of super-exploitation.

Yes, you will find that Argentine intellectuals tend to "foggy verbosity" as a tic. Anyways, not really biased IMHO. Looking around myself here, sometimes I think if I get seriously disabled I could just as well step in front of the next bus and be done with it. These people get screwed up every way and back here, daily. Unless you were already a well positioned independent professional or have a relatively wealthy family to fall back into, I think becoming disabled today would mean your life is pretty much over, if you're not a masochist.

The disability rights movement in America benefited from the gains earned by previous labor and civil rights struggles. Disability activists in Argentina, a country only recently emerged from dictatorship, are at a tremendous disadvantage because they are operating in something of a vacuum. I certainly encounter disability bias here in the States, but I received the supports I needed to go to law school, get a decent job, and live independently in my community. My life would probably have turned out very differently if I was an Argentinian.
