If the 8-bit Tarot isn't low-tech enough for you, the Aecletic Mini Tarot Deck makes it look downright HD in comparison! May induce flashbacks of Taboo: The Sixth Sense, the NES' infamous Tarot simulator.

I..Um...I ..had a copy of TABOO that was unhealthily invested in.

Man! It feels good to get that off my chest. Stuff like that can eat you away inside.

Was Taboo an official Nintendo Seal of Approval game? How did it get past Nintendo's heavily moralising family policy? I thought even vague religious iconography in most games released in America was, uh, taboo.

Yeah, piratebowling and I were discussing that last night, which is what led to this post and the naming of the Aecletic Mini as the true heir to the 8-bit legacy.

I remember renting "Taboo" because when I was 11 years old I played every single game I could get my hands on, no matter how lame the premise.

Is the NES version really any more stupid than "real" Tarot?

Yeah, I rented Taboo. I think it was even covered in Nintendo Power. What a waste of time.

I don't think the NES version is stupid, FWIW. But thanks for trolling!

When I was younger, I used to read Tarot cards in order to flirt with girls. At the church youth group. You'd be surprised at its effectiveness.

So seeing this post on the main page reminded me of this awesome NES/SNES old school western style RPG based around a tarot theme. I've thought of this game on and off for years. So I came into the thread intending to ask if anyone else remembered it, and WC_Helmets has already posted a link. Man I love Metafilter.

I'm in the same boat as jeremy b. I didn't get this at all, and totally wasted my one rental I was allowed weekly.

Fuck Taboo.

Trivia: Taboo was developed by Rare, later known for hits like Goldeneye and just about every 3-D platformer Nintendo published on the N64 after Super Mario 64. Now they're owned by Microsoft.

I have a pretty amusing story about my brother convincing one of his friends that he could summon the devil with Taboo. Also, I thought the music was pretty catchy in the way good NES music is. That's the extent of my praise for it.

its funny, but the second link is actually a much clearer and more decipherable deck than the first. yay color-coding, numbers.

To really nail the 8-bit look you got to have the right palette. And use four colors at a time.

another (great) archaic video game with a Tarot theme was The Fool's Errand. turns out the original author is working on a sequel even now, and in the meantime if you want to step through a truly esoteric succession of kludges you can play the original in Windows.

Ah, Shin Megami Tensei:Persona 3. Most ludicrous Japanese tarot-themed RPG/high school dating sim game ever.

I spent 93 hours on that game. 93 hours. And I have a copy of Persona 4 sitting on my shelf, taunting me right now.
