Did you enjoy it? Now pay UP!!

Lastfm has sent all their members yesterday that it will turn into a strict membership based system - where one has to pay $3 or 3Euros - which according to my exchange rate doesn't really make sense- per MONTH! their e-mail writes "Your free trial to Last.fm Radio is about to end. If you're enjoying it, why not subscribe for only $3.00/month and continue listening to non-stop personalised radio." Hold on... I was never told that I WAS ON a Free Trial to begin with! WTF!

This FPP is a little garbled and a lot bloggy. Their FAQ says
Do I have to pay for using Last.fm?
Signing up and creating a user profile on Last.fm is free, and so is using most of the features with the exception of the radio, which is a subscriber feature in most countries.

Where do I need a subscription to listen to the radio?
If you live outside the US, UK or Germany you can try out Last.fm Radio with a free 30-track trial, after which a subscription is required to listen to it. Subscribing to Last.fm only costs €3.00 per month and in addition to non-stop personalised radio, you get other benefits such as ad free browsing and streaming. Read more about what you get with a subscription.

What if I live in the US, UK or Germany?
If you live in one of these three countries, you can listen to Last.fm Radio for free (with the exception of subscription premium radio features: listening to playlists and stations of music you've loved or tagged).
So they probably did not send that email to "all their members yesterday". Phrased differently, this would have made an okay AskMe post, but I'm afraid this FPP is not long for this world.

Sorry my bad for thinking that there was a change in the membership rule yesterday, because that is what I thought. My bad.
Now that I've seen these "replies" from you all, that this was the case some time ago?? why didn't anyone post anything up when this happened???

ALSO when I signed up - about a year ago - there was no "30 track free than paid membership" clause ANYWHERE ... thus my mistake.
Interesting enough, I haven't been notified with this change ever. It seems like I am the ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD that wasn't notified or what???

It's an epigdemic, I tell you.

I wasn't notified about the change. I wasn't notified about a lot of things. Like my coffee creamer. It went bad like a week before the expiration day. A WEEK. WTF. You ever pour out a carton of creamer and find more chunks in it than a bowl of chowder? Well, I have. I've also had chowder before. Not my favorite dish. It's better when it's the real thing and not from a can, of course, I'll grant you that. Whatever happened to Hugh Grant and that prostitute thing? I mean, nobody talks about that anymore. It's just "Oh, Notting Hill." "Ohhh Julia Roberts." And WTF was her accent about in Mary Reilly? Lordy.

oh just another thing, I wrote it not because it concerned just me, but anyone who listened to/enjoyed listening to lastfm till yesterday without having been clearly notified of the changes in their agreement clause with their clients and then been kicked out of the service out of the blue. - also to warn others that this is what has been happening. I didn't see any heated argument concerning this here or anywhere, or maybe I haven't been as alert as the rest of you. Also maybe its just that most people do live in US UK or Germany, thus doen't concern you anyhow.
Also, what is funny is the fact that if it was only "30" tracks and they introduced this a month ago, my subscription should've ended like 29 days ago. Thus I thought it was a change that happened yesterday.

This FPP is a little garbled and a lot bloggy.

Garbled to the point of being misleading and actually wrong. If you're in the US, UK or Germany, it's business as usual. No change. Outside there? Well, it's unfortunate but it's difficult to accuse Last.Fm of skullduggery or bait-and-switch. They're a business, they can't make a buck off you if you're outside the above countries, and so what you're experienced to date has been a nice, long, free taster. No one ever promised it would go on forever.

People may like to check out the coverage of Spotify to see if it covers their countries.

I set amarok to upload everything I listen to to last.fm, but I hardly ever sign in to the service itself. Last.fm is precious to me solely because, based on my playlist, it once informed me that Jolie Holland was playing in my city - which meant I finally got to see her live. I hope it works that well at least once more in the future.

If you go to your local hardware store, they'll have post-hole diggers that really help with this. It's basically a shovel-type implement that has two rounded blades that form a post-hole shaped hole. It's a little tough to ram it into the ground, since they're usually too small to jump on like a shovel, so if the ground is hard where you live, you'll want to get it wet before you start digging.

Also, if you're just putting a post in the dirt (no cement), well, it's going to come down eventually, so you'll be putting it back up in a few years. The good news is that there's a type of hammer that fits over the post that has an opening on end and is solid on the other. You just bring it down on the post and drives it all in. The hammer is heavy, so it ends up doing a lot of the work. These things are a godsend if you're building a fence this way.

"scrobble" ... right, now I remember why I lost interest in last.fm ... nothing turns me off quicker than invented slang.

I'm gonna start a blog wherein I keep track of every sip of juice or cider that I take. That way, everyone I network with can know what kinds of juice I like the best. This Web 2.0 method of drinking juice assures juice-drinkers maximum integration with other juice enthusiasts. When you drink juice in this new, networked manner, it's called "dradackaling," and anyone who wants their juice-drinking to say something about themselves as a person is doing it.

I like last.fm because I can put on an artist I know as a radio station and find other artists I will enjoy. I can also look at my friends' pages and know what kind of presents to get them. Yeah, if my friends were next door I would just know what they listen to, but most of my friends live at least 800 miles away.

It's worth $3 a month.

Also, last.fm has never really worked for me. I don't think I really get it. That might be because I can't stand 'signing up' for things online; I think I was supposed to put all my information on some kind of registration page on last.fm in order to start hearing entire songs or something. As it was, it really just pissed me off.

But mp3s annoy my ear and give me a headache, so I'm probably weird that way.

If you are setting wood posts, using cement is not a good idea, it makes them rot much faster. Most rot on a wooden post is right at grade level so I suppose if the cement was at the bottom of the hole it might do less damage. The best way to set a wooden post is to backfill with stone dust or dense mix and strenuously tamp in four to six inch lifts. Nailing a strip of copper sheeting around a wooden post, just at or below grade level, is a good way to extend the life of the post.

Tantrus Magnificus was the 15th emperor of Rome. He was a short dude – just under five feet tall – and had major self-image issues as a result. Even before he got elected emperor, he was always acting out in really annoying ways – fishing for compliments from the Senate, putting himself down just loud enough for the Spartan girls to hear him. You know, stuff guys still do today when they’re insecure jerks.

And then it got really bad once he got the big job. Suddenly, nobody approved of the job he was doing. His economic stimulus plans involved too many bestial orgies and not enough financial impact. Rumors circulated that he was a woman. (The fact that people could believe that last one really hurt him, especially given the orgies.)

He had a famous meltdown on a Tuesday in 1752 – a date that Roman history scholars refer to as “The Tuesday Meltdown of 1752” – wherein he took off all his clothes and ran around his own enormous party, screaming and yelling and grabbing plates of food from people and throwing the food in the swimming pool. Just being a general horse’s ass.

In a stunning coincidence, the root words tan and trum translate, almost literally, to “that asshole over there.”

Can't we just flag and move on? This was not an attempt to sell you anything. This was not astroturfing. This was not a viral marketing post. This was not a drunk making gestures at your mother. A weak post - the poster agrees - but to chase them out of town? If it were possible for a poster to retract a post, would we be here?

Can I just say that a significant change to the revenue model of a very significant web service is definitely post-worthy? Can anyone saying that isn't please go back and skim read a couple of weeks' worth of posts from Metafilter year one?

There's an excellent post here screaming to get out, about the changing nature of the music business, the realities of ad-supported services, and about how to handle a passionate community (very very very lightly). Try to see past the way the post was made and tackle the subject matter. The poster misrepresented the facts. That's been addressed. What else have you got?

That there's disparity in the service provided to countries is all the more interesting: that certain countries can support an ad-based approach and others can't means that both users and service providers are going to have to face some tough questions. From the comments on the Last.fm blog, a number of users outside of the ad-based service feel that they are subsidising users elsewhere. If that's a misleading representation of the situation it can only mean Last.fm haven't done the best job of communicating the need for change to the users, nor how that change works.

And to anyone saying "I didn't use it, so blah". I'm just at a loss as to why you'd bother to come into the thread in the first place? It's funny that you don't give a pair of shits since you're apparently happy enough to leave a fresh one here. That leaves you with only one shit for the stuff you actually do care about.

The presentation leaves a lot to be desired, but yeah, like nthdegx I fully expected this to be postworthy. That was some impressive scaring away, guys. Nice work.

How am I supposed to get any work done when the mods are missing! They better have good excuse for making me worry like this.

Just wanted to check in here with fencepost watch and report that I dug two fence post holes AND moved a gate (two more holes) yesterday.

Original Poster: posts something of genuine interest to them, probably not a great MetaFilter post. No harm intended.
The Goon Squad: goes out of their (our?) way to make sure the original poster feels like the asshole they probably are not. Intent.

What is the more destructive behavior? Please show your work.
