This post was deleted for the following reason: This is maybe the laziest possible way to do this. There's got to be a better post out there. -- cortex

The path of the Magic Specter.

Now give us Franken, too, pls.

RedState reacts...

Who’s really made the move? The democrats. Way to the left. It’s a lie to say the GOP is now pandering to the most foul parts of its base.

Damnit, I was composing a whole post. Well, here it is:

The last time any party had a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate was 1977-1979. With Arlen Specter's announcement that he is switching parties and Al Franken's recent court victory all but guaranteeing his victory in Minnesota, the Democrats will have a filibuster-proof 60 seats in the Senate. Eight years ago, Jim Jeffords switched parties to change control of the Senate from a 50-50 tie (resolved by VP Cheney in favor of the GOP) to Democratic control.

Sen. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin (R-TX) switching parties to caucus with the Democrats in a shocking turn only days before Brutal Muscle 5 -- The Rebloodening.

"If you're excited about a filibuster-proof majority, as well as the mudhole I'm going to stomp in some Republican asses, then give me a hell yeah," requested Senator Austin before catching two thrown beer cans and drinking them simultaneously to the approval of the seated House.

Well, it kinda is, in that he finally pulled the trigger. It had been rumored for a while, so the surprise is him finally going through with it.

I hope, hack that he is, that this means he's willing to get all judicial on the Bush lackeys he used to protect for the sake of the party. I am wary of the strength of his convictions, even though he'd been a fairly leftist Republican. While I think that it's overstating the case here, a pal reminded me "Never trust a traitor."

Specter's decision would give Democrats a 60 seat filibuster proof majority in the Senate assuming Democrat Al Franken is eventually sworn in as the next Senator from Minnesota. (Former Sen. Norm Coleman is appealing Franken's victory in the state Supreme Court.)

1) filibuster-proof senate would be nice (speaking as a dirty liberal)
2) Franken vs Coleman isn't concluded yet? Crimeny!
