Good for squirrel, but feh on the pointless captioning. posted by Burhanistan at 9:59 PM on April 29
Yeah. Sweet story, really annoying fade to the text. Just subtitle it. posted by aeschenkarnos at 10:02 PM on April 29
I loved it, but I also love squirrels even though they like to decimate my bird feeders. They gots to eat too. posted by MaryDellamorte at 10:10 PM on April 29
Eh, I liked the "story-telling" of the captioning as well as the music. Turned a mediocre video clip into a fun little adventure!
Last fall, my brother and I happened across a very similar scene with bighorn sheep in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. A group of adult bighorn's were trying to coax one that was still just a bit small. [disclosure: link goes to my brother's site] posted by netbros at 10:24 PM on April 29 [1 favorite]

Nope. The text in between was gratuitous and pretty much just added so the video would last the length of that song. They narrate every. single. part. of. the. story. annoyingly. It could have been done much more subtly.
But it's such a sweet, sweet story, I can live with it. posted by jabberjaw at 11:13 PM on April 29 [3 favorites]
I'd have loved to watch the squirrels. I videotape squirrels, too. This was about the somebody's favorite and the captioning it out until the song was done (I think -- I stopped after fifteen seconds).
Not best of the web. Actually pretty crappy.
I'd watch the squirrels if someone posted the unfuckedup video. posted by gum at 12:01 AM on April 30

I also thought
this is a little comment that the video by a guy named googly was here's the compliment fabulous but the narration
and here's the criticism was intrusive and annoying here's the end of the comment . Note oops there's more to its in the form of a faux memo aspiring young director: you and he switched to second person would have which is an interesting grammatical trick built up more its a bit of snark suspense and phrased as some tension without well-meaning advice any narration this seems to be the at actual end all of the comment. posted by googly at 4:16 AM on April 30 [6 favorites]
How the fuck is babby squirrel going to learn if you people give him the answers?
besides, a video with 4 minutes of squirrel work and 1.5 minutes of students taking credit points to business majors. posted by kuujjuarapik at 4:32 AM on April 30 [1 favorite]
It's actually much better if you watch it without the sound, folks.
Anyway, I'm torn between liking grey squirrels because they are small and cute and not liking them because they trash my bird feeder, tease my cat and have pushed smaller, even cuter red squirrels to virtual disappearance. posted by MuffinMan at 4:37 AM on April 30

Does anyone else notice they're also repeating looped footage with different cropping? Not only is this not a good video it is FUCKING SHIT and if you like it you're a marketing victim. posted by autodidact at 4:52 AM on April 30 [1 favorite]
This would be cute except for the fact that nobody made sure that the older squirrel was actually the baby squirrel's parent. We could have just watched a baby squirrel abduction. posted by srboisvert at 4:57 AM on April 30 [9 favorites]
I can picture the mother squirrel slapping herself in the head and saying, "What the fuck are those assholes doing? I'm trying to teach my slacker son how to earn a living, he acts like the wall is toooo high to climb, and these idiots think they have to help him up!" posted by digsrus at 4:58 AM on April 30 [1 favorite]
So, I watched the clip, and read the comments... "What utter bores they must be", I thought... It sure can't be fun to be around people who seriously critique a simple home video, like this one. posted by livingdots at 6:01 AM on April 30 [2 favorites]

I don't know. There are unsettling socialist undertones to this video. Faced with a challenge, does the baby squirrel find the strength and courage to make it up the wall? No, he just sits around and bleats until the state bails him out. WHY ARE WE BUYING THE MORTGAGES OF DEADBEAT BABY SQUIRRELS? posted by bicyclefish at 6:40 AM on April 30 [3 favorites]
My point: If it's not a film by Michael Cimino, it's not worth the time critiquing. posted by livingdots at 6:45 AM on April 30

Twee and annoying. I bailed. someone on here told me the ending anyway .
some one make a Kubrick-ian remake and I'll watch the whole thing.
This reminds me that a couple years ago we watched a similar drama involving a baby squirrel not being able to climb the gutter outside our 2nd floor balcony to get to the roof (and presumably into the attic of our building too, to pitter patter back and forth at all hours, though that's another story), involving much chattering and coaxing and running up and down by the mother squirrel. For a long time (pretty much an entire day) the sad little guy just sat there in the lower gutter making pathetic noises and half-heartedly trying, but eventually he did figure it out. Learning to use those sharp little claws is apparently not trivial. posted by aught at 9:36 AM on April 30

If anything, I've learned today that UCLA students lack the ability to stand sufficiently still, and they certainly don't have the common sense to rest their camera on something (anything!) as a makeshift tripod. I like squirrels and shenanigans, but I don't like shaky-cam. posted by explosion at 9:47 AM on April 30
