It's always struck me as odd that people who intend to build campfires choose not to use effective accelerants. Improvised napalm is easily made from polystyrene and toluene. Or soap flakes and kerosene. Keep several boxes of sparklers from the fourth of July for your next camping trip. Use a few ounces of smokeless powder. Notice I didn't say "just splash a bunch of flammable liquid on it" as that will flash back at the fire-starter, and burn out quickly. But these guys in the video are clueless goobers, intent on making a YouTube video and not a warming campfire. I'll bet their wood was wet. Growing up as I did in a cold place like Montana, building a fire could mean the difference between life and death. This was well illustrated in Jack London's short story.

Can I have a cultural reconnect as to why this video is 1 minute and 42 seconds of fun? Of course I have no idea why others like it, but... I love being in the wilderness. I love rocking out. And never in a million years would I have the impulse to combine those activities. But now here are these two guys, thrashing away to their inner rock souls in a location I'd probably be all preciously, contemplatively, "in Nature". In its contrast this razzes me a bit, pointing out that I often unthinkingly accept an oversimplified characterization of the outdoors as a tranquil refuge from culture. Plus, they're really into their rock-ness. I like their enormous enthusiasm for something I'd never do: it simultaneously gives me delight, and puts my own habits into perspective.

I confess to having a defensive reaction when seeing another woman get pressured to discuss hitting it - even though "it" is adorably enthusiastic and hairy speedo-clad yawping wilderness headbangers. What can I say - I'm an old-fashioned gal. I just think that a conversation about "hitting it" is absurd to the point of being funny. And when we are talking about the hitability of a man trying to start a fire with a canoe paddle, in a speedo, while headbanging to some Deicide (you have to turn the volume up for the video) is just too funny to pass up. the music is coming from a headset close to us but the camera hasnt picked it up. Right. I too would go with that over what was clearly your first choice; "we were crazy high and had no fucking clue what was going on, as demonstrated by the speedos and the canoe paddle". It sounds way more reasonable.

Reading over my posts here, I guess I need to clarify what I like about "hit it" jokes. If it's just a normal, "hey it's a picture of Charlize Theron; i'd hit it" joke, then I just pretty much ignore it. Whatever, ya know. However, if we're using the joke as it applies to a kind of surreal scene like a dude in a speedo, head banging while trying to coax a fire into being with a canoe paddle to a barely heard Deicide song, then it makes for a funny. To me. About the Cooter Counter thing, Jessamyn just hipped me to the MeTa thread about it so I'm going to check it out nowish.
