Hmmm.... From the Reblogger code... <SCRIPT type=text/javascript src="http://stakdump.port5.com/cgi-bin/reblogger/jsrb.pl?command=load&id=<$BlogID$>"&rt; It bothers me that this service is hosted on Portland, a free web host which, to my knowledge, allows only 100MB of bandwidth per user. What happens when this guy starts serving everyone in Blog-Land?

You might want to use DotComments if you're able. We've used it for some time now at 3bruces and love it.

And what if you're server doesn't support SS langs? (my point exactly.. :) That's the reason things like this + blogvoices exist..

Is anyone willing to code a open source discussion group system? Most parts are available already. Phil Ulrich hacked dotcomments in a way that you use it on a remote server and integrate it via JavaScript into your pages. With this code one weblogger with php on his server can host the discussion for his friends sites. All you have to do is adding a referer check to avoid missuse. Should be easy. Before you ask: Why am I not doing it? I gave up weblogging.

Arf, the slashdot system is available open source. I decided to buy UBBS instead. For $250 (for a small user like me), it's well worth it.

The slashdot system and all clones are something completely different. I am talking about little blogvoices clones. The idea is that those who have PHP can share some of their bandwidth to host the discussions of their friends. I have no glue about the ISPs in America, but i know a lot of German webloggers who have cheap webspace with no CGI or PHP support. I didn't want to start a open source discussion. It might as well be freeware, shareware, Amazon-wishlist-ware or whatever. I just wanted to point out that another free alternative is available, but it needs tiny modifications to control the traffic.

There are a few open source (mostly PHP or Perl) UBB clones out there, one that looks OK is phpBB. But those wouldn't (nor would slash and its clones) work as a Blogvoice style system. I know some people have put something similar together in PHP and possibly some other ways, but then you're left looking for a server that supports such. Interface is another issue. Since UBB has established itself, people have become very familiar with that style of interface and don't like anything else. I prefer a threaded view of messages (like Slash) rather than a flat view (UBB), probably because of using newsreaders and such (hey, there's a project, set up one of these so that they have a nntp interface to go along with the web one, that would be nifty). But it seems the general internet user is confused by threads and hierarchies of replies.

What happens when this guy starts serving everyone in Blog-Land? Then he asks for help.. and one of the nice people in blogger-land that work for an isp/hosting company offer him a deal.. :) Which obviously did not happen for chrish and BlogVoices after Pyra lost its T-1 provider, so this doesn't feel any more certain, if you ask me. Sigh...my hosting service doesn't support php, so if I want to put comments back I have to go through the elaborate process of getting a second free host service, then set up the dotcomments hack....maybe I should just follow Steven's advice and shell out some bucks for UBB.

I've given up on reblogger... it slows down obscenely my page's load time. And then it doesn't work. Which is unfortunate, because when it did, it was great.

But it seems the general internet user is confused by threads and hierarchies of replies. Or perhaps they just find the threaded systems too freaking slow. I understand the benefits of threading, but in general I prefer a flat mode for speed, and because discussions stay more focused. If I have to keep opening multiple windows for each thread, I generally don't even bother. It's too slow.
