Well, the main page is info-free and I can't be bothered looking deeper.

I read whatever was on this site about 6 months ago and then forgot about it. Good to see it's still there. Also, needs the "creepypasta" tag.

Yes, I go here anytime I want to come up with a new horrific thing for a roleplaying game.

So what movie is this an ARG for?

It took me a few minutes and some googling to figure out what the hell was going on here, but I'm sold. This is a pretty amazing exercise in storytelling and world-building (although, admittedly, some of the entries are weaker than other). I especially like SCP-294, though.

Ah, nuts--the site's been moved since the post Rhaomi linked to above, so that's why this didn't register as a double.

Note from General Bowe
My office and commission have determined that in the event of an intelligence leak the best way to handle it would be to utilize the dissemination method and discredit the initial leak by compiling poorly-written works of fiction in the same vein. When our addendums are obviously false, the intelligence link will be dismissed as well.

I like the concept, but the writing style is too chatty and friendly for any government agency that I've ever had the displeasure of reading written reports from. Also, not enough all caps.

I was thinking about posting this awhile back but saw the original thread, which was full of "this sucks and you suck" and decided not to. Great to see it getting some appreciation this time around. :D

If you liked this, you might also appreciate the short story "A Colder War" (by Mefi's own cstross), which looks at ancient Lovecraftian horrors through the lens of military science.

Similar to SJG's "Warehouse 23".

what is interesting about this?
posted by caddis at 6:43 PM on May 20, 2009

What's the point of that question, caddis, simply to demonstrate that you're better and harder to entertain than everyone else? What answer could anyone possibly give you that would not be responded to with "Oh, so I was right, it is stupid and beneath me"?

It's a collection of user-submitted idiosyncratically-formatted little short pieces about weird, creepy, or occasionally just silly things with a common vaguely-defined setting. I mean, you might as well pick up a collection of short stories in a library and walk over to the reference desk and demand that its presence in the library be justified. (And make no mistake- the notion that this post shouldn't be here is inherent in your question.) So it's not to your taste- so what? There's several posts here every day that I don't give a shit about- not that they're guideline breaking or bloggy or whatever, just that they don't interest me- and I somehow manage not to question their presence.

I started off with scp-294 as someone linked above, and am finding it to be an enjoyable read thus far.

I miss Warehouse 23. I once opened a box and actually found "Happiness".

I'll be damned if it wasn't the most startling thing I've ever found.

This reminds me a lot of the Repository of Dangerous Things webcomic.

Currently my favorite is SCP-085, which is weird, and yet kind of cute and sad at the same time. Least favorite is all the Christian apocalyptic stuff.

I liked it, if only for the dry wit of the bureaucratic regs. For instance:

Unbreakable Jar - For all intents and purposes, SCP-161 is unbreakable, though tests show it is made of ordinary glass. Its original lid has been replaced by a hermetically resealable one. All attempts to break and/or destroy the jar (including detonation of a 3-kiloton nuclear device) have failed. As such, no broken glass hazards need be observed regarding SCP-161.

I really wish they would cut down on the whole "subject may be compelled to do [horrible thing x] after exposure to this object" for every other entry, though. It's mildly creepy at first, but just seems lazy and unimaginative after the dozenth occurence.

Some of these are awesome. (Not all of them, but some of them.) I recall an abortive attempt my regular group once made to run a roleplaying game based on the idea of the "Library of Congress" containing a secret repository of arcane and quasi-malevolent artifacts and knowledge. IIRC, the collection was maintained by most of the world's population of vampires, held there by the ancient mythic requirement to sort out and organize any piled objects in disarray (such as, say, grains of rice or, y'know, magical tomes). Some interns were kept at work continually messing up areas of the library to keep the vampires from ever finishing their job and getting out. They'd direct you to where you wanted to go, but they hated you. Just like real librarians!

Good times, good times...

This is totally awesome. Lil bit of X-Files with some Lovecraft mixed in. I've got a dozen tabs open right now as I can't stop opening the cross-references.

This is great!

Wow, I love these, I've read dozens and dozens, I saw the original post.

And here's the thing: I just read scp-043 and it totally made all my hair stand up. I have no, *no* idea why.
