Brittany Murphy Stars In: The Ramen Girl!

Those of us who do not live in Japan, Singapore, or the Netherlands were deprived of this culture clash comedy in theatrical release - but as of today, it's available on DVD. In a hurry? This liveblogged review might just be better than the real thing.

Smells like double ramen.

Movie was ok, let down at the ending, such American thinking...

I can't believe my first post was a double.
(commits seppuku).

Still haven't watched this movie yet, but I felt obliged to come in and mention that a good portion of it was filmed on my street in Shibuya. I remember walking by on my way to work and wondering what was being filmed, and it wasn't until I saw my neighborhood in the trailer that I found out.

This is how you do ramen.

I only remembered the first post because the trailer was soooo bad/weird/oddly compelling.

The key to the double post is that you have to have a certain about of spirit to your double post. Your double post lacks that spirit, so essential to a good double post. Therefore, a famous Japanese actor will slum in a bad American movie, and dump your post in the trash...

Oddly enough I was just reading about her getting written out of The Expendables.

Well, I love ramen, the real stuff you get in a ramen noodle house, but every once in a while I get a craving for the instant stuff. There's just something about the minute noodles that gets under your skin. Probably melanoma or something.

That looks like a parody of a movie. So awful.
All it's missing is a montage of Tom Cruise becoming really skilled at something over a period of time.
I do like her as Luanne, though.

For me it was the slabs of pork (each about an inch thick). If I was feeling particularly foolhardy with my health, I'd order a plate of the pork slabs on the side as well, to go with.

Can someone remind me what they're called?

Oooooooooohhh I hate her so much

Me, I can not bring myself to hate the woman who did the voice of Luuann on King Of The Hill:

Luanne: Finish your vegetables!
Bobby Hill: They're aren't any vegetables.
Luanne: Don't talk back to your pretend mother!

But yeah, her choices in film work need a bit to be desired....

..."leave a bit to be desired", even.

Kakuni. mmmm!

Durn, the pork is called chashu. And it's perfectly healthy for you. After all, everyone knows Japanese is healthy!
posted by Ghidorah at 8:00 PM on June 2, 2009

YES!!! (and great picture, wow)

Imagine a plate of that (6 slices) and a 2-3 more in the soup. If I wasn't going everywhere by bicycle, I'd be dead by now.
posted by Durn Bronzefist at 8:01 PM on June 2, 2009

Yep, familiar with the chashu and that isn't it. Oh man, kakuni...
posted by Durn Bronzefist at 8:04 PM on June 2, 2009

the kakuni is delicious, but chashu is a bit different. The kakuni is stewed/braised pork belly, chashu is, well, not as melty. both are delicious.
posted by Ghidorah at 8:05 PM on June 2, 2009

I'm going to have to find out if there's a place in Toronto that does it right.

Melty. Good adjective.

I work in a video store. My knowledge of the horrible shit that comes out every week is insurmountable. As an addendum, may I present both MONSTURD ("Don't get caught with your pants down!") and the follow up RETARDEAD ("They're not so special anymore!").

I was in Tokyo when they were filming this in 2006, and one of my friends took an alarming number of stalker-type photos of Brittany while she was filming scenes in Harajuku. I mean, hundreds of photos.
