"Mahjong" means something like "hemp fibers drying under a shed". I'm not sure why, but this seems completely appropriate for George Bush.

Just reading the Wikipedia page made me go, "WTF?" The Japanese version didn't improve matters.

I'll have to check it out next time I visit the 漫喫.

"Mahjong" means something like "hemp fibers drying under a shed". I'm not sure why, but this seems completely appropriate for George Bush.

In Japanese, the characters literally mean "hemp sparrow." That also seems completely appropriate.

To be completely pedantic about the actual meaning of the Chinese/Japanese characters... oh, never mind.

Anyway, this is so totally awesome.

>"Mahjong" means something like "hemp fibers drying under a shed". I'm not sure why, but this seems completely appropriate for George Bush.

In Japanese, the characters literally mean "hemp sparrow." That also seems completely appropriate.

I actually just last year wrote a series of articles for a theater company that was doing a new play involving mahjongg, so I had to research mahjongg itself. The "sparrow" part is definitely accurate -- it's associated with the sound the tiles make as you shuffle them about on the board and they clack against each other; for whatever reason, players associated this noise with the sound of sparrows flapping their wings. So anything with "sparrow" is pretty accurate; I'm not so sure I trust that "hemp fibers drying under a shed" one.

And yes, I wish like HELL that this translation existed back when I was writing this, because DAMN it would have been fun to include in what I was writing.
