I stopped reading Kottke when he put that @#$@ X10 pop-under ad on his blog.

As for being "the best blog there is, period", that's obviously a strictly subjective opinion, Bunky.

Speaking of blogs, does anyone know what the hell happened to BoingBoing? When I checked it yesterday, it'd been completely obliterated by a Japanese martial-arts webpage? WTF!? Has it been hacked?

Hmph. Blogs are like intelligent agents. The best one is the one that happens to map most closely to your own interests. Now This seems to have the highest hit rate for me in terms of linking to stuff that interests me, but I'm under no illusion that that means it's the best blog in existence (that would imply that my interests are the best possible interests).

Well, when the link text ericost used gets spidered by google, it's link popularity may make it the defacto "best blog" according to google. Shades of the whole "more evil than satan himself" deal.
Don't get me wrong, I love Jason like a son, but I have less-than-zero interest in seeing yet another link to, and discussion of, a so-called "a-list" weblog. Many, many people already link to Kottke, Zeldman, Glassdog, Evhead, and Camworld. All are well-regarded sites, certainly, but not a one of them needs the promotion.

What Metafilter is lacking are links to blogs that are not as popular and that we don't know about. Call me nutty, but I would much rather check out a new, interesting blog everyday, even if I didn't end up reading it regularly.

Here is my putting-my-money-where-my-mouth-is example: The Magnificent Melting Object, written by a musician who seems obsessed with critical theory.

I love Jason Kottke. He is my everything. I worship the ground he almost walks on. When I see him in person, because I am lucky enough to live in the same city as he does, or perhaps at a conference where he tickles my ears with flights of microcontent™ fancy, I tremble and shake and feel giddy and happy. His insights on human existence and the depth of knowledge he holds on every subject under the sun never fails to impress, nay, shock and unnerve me. He sees into my soul with his links. Timothy McVeigh <strike>is</strike>was absolute evil!

My dad went to college with a guy named Karl Lewis. Although spelled differently, it sounded the same as Carl Lewis, which I found very amusing.

Carl Lewis won his 7th and 8th career gold medals in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Barcelona, of course, is the name of the group responsible for Kottke's novelty-tune fave "I Have the Password to Your Shell Account", as listed on his media list.

On many phone systems (such as this one) you can use a special feature to track threatening or malicious calls. This feature, called a Customer Originated Trace (COT) can be assigned to one of the buttons on a keypad, making it -- of course -- the COT key.

What many people don't know is he changed his name to Jason after the smash debut of the Alex Kottke Band (big in Germany). He couldn't handle the fame.

Later, after a brief stint as a plumber (that's him on the left, before the reconstructive surgery to hide his true identity), he settled down in the unassuming role of web designer.

Really, I'm suprised this stuff got left out of the FAQ.

The highest-scoring word I've ever played in Scrabble is "QUIVERS" hitting a double-word square and netting me a bonus 50 points for playing all my letters.

If proper nouns were allowed in Scrabble, "KOTTKE" would score a scant 14 points, which is hardly a tribute to this noble soul. "KOTTKES", however, would enable you to get that precious bonus if you played the "S" to make another word plural -- but how many Kottkes could there be in the world?

I feel so spent. And used.

I'm just tired and exhausted. Like I've been through a battle. Or, like I witnessed a battle. In fact, had I witnessed a battle, I might be moved to write a poem. The third verse of which might say:

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And then you could take the first verse of that poem, set it to the tune of an old drinking song, and make it the National Anthem of a large, influential nation.

That would make me a certain historical figure.

I am Francis Scott Key.

Awww, Jason, it's okay, snookums. If Meg won't lop my arms off, I'll give you a hug.

I am, however, feeling rather besmirched -- Lance always told me I was his everything. Hmph.

This thread, however, has served one very fine purpose ... the introduction of a new word into my lexicon: kermitting. There simply aren't enough pink clouds and butterflies to convey my joy about that discovery.

And just be glad you don't have my last name, Wright, or you'd have a whole new slew of jokes on your hands (left, wrong, write, rites of passage, mr. right, miss right, blah blah blah).

You post a pointless link to metafilter, and watch the people argue about how stupid it is, then watch the topic change.
If it is, I wish I'd thought of it. If it isn't, well it's funny to me, hehe.

Ah, jeeze, kottke, be glad you are notorious enough to have people hate you just because and love you just because and think you are cute just because. Blogging is weird; you start it for yourself, or your friends, or just because you have to say something and before you know it you're on fuckedweblog.

I'm still not sure what the hell is going on. I'm going to take a nap. Do you like naps? I do. There was this one time I woke from a nap, and mind you, naps don't refresh me as much as they put me in a nice relaxed zone for the rest of the day, but THIS time was different, because I woke up and was all, "Yes, world, I can take you on, world, yes!" Sometimes I take naps and I wonder why, because I'm not really tired, and Lord knows I have a lot of stuff to do, like surf the Web and not look for a job and write screenplays or begin that 6,583-part epic poem on the mating habits of woodpeckers that I'd been meaning to get cracking on since I got my master's degree, but lordy, no, I just grab me some shuteye and it's all, like, "do my teeth hurt? what about that rash? will I die alone and unloved?", really existential type of stuff, you know what I mean, but really, the point of naps is not so much to get rest as to break up the monotony of an otherwise pointless and dull day here on this spaceship we call Earth, and did you know that Buckminster Fuller coined the term, "spaceship Earth," so really, EPCOT owes his estate a lot of royalty money, but you can't trust those Disney bastards, not for a SECOND, they'll sue your ass just as soon as shake your hand, the forked-tongue bastards, how DARE they lecture to us about morality when they're letting Michael Jackson roam around the park in that stupid surgical mask that he wears because he's had one nose job too many and it's falling apart, isn't that gross? Isn't that just absolutely disgusting? His NOSE is falling apart, how could anyone actually DO that, it's so beyond me, then again I also get freaked out by amputee porn, so maybe I have this whole "integrity of the flesh" thing going, because *BLAM*hjlkjjdsfnfffffffju;wnnnnn8y...........................................................

solistrato, how does your post tie back to Kottke?

I think there's a secret message in the all-caps words:

THIS EPCOT SECOND DARE NOSE BLAM

Following Rodii's lead -- that is, understanding "EPCOT" as a loose homonym of "KOTTKE", we have:

THIS KOTTKE SECOND DARE NOSE BLAM

"NOSE" is clearly "KNOWS." Now, "SECOND DARE" seems to be an erroneous transcription of "SECOND HEIR."

So we get the message: "This, Kottke's second heir knows: Blam!"

The enigma deepens. Who is Kottke's second heir? And is the "blam" a subtle threat that someone's going to, to use the vernacular, "rub out" our beloved Kottke? Perhaps to assume his throne?

Scooby gang, we must solve the mystery!

I want to totally distance myself from the plot to kill Kottke. The "die cotke" thing was just a wild coincidence. Any communications between myself and his second heir were completely innocent.

It was just a joke people. I never imagined it would get this far. Please God forgive me. Jason, if you're reading this, please be careful.

This thread clears up my confusion. I though kottke was a latke made with beets or something. I have spent months since going to Austin and hearing every conversation bring up kottke. You know, *I saw kottke at Iron City* or *kottke was on the a-list*. Most restaurants in Austin don't have a-lists on their menu like places in Boring, Oregon and what would BBQ places do with kottkes on their menu let alone latkes. I can save my weekends from the wasted time of going to bookstores looking for the kottke recipes.

It sounds like Mr. Kottke needs a hug. I will send my parents, they are *huggers*. The live out past the end of one of the BART lines. If the need for hugs is really bad they can stay in a hotel near by if that works out well.

I heard Boykottke perform at the mall, but then 'Nsync showed up and got all Westsiiiiiide on their asses and called them Post-Woebegon Minnesota Poseurs and started a big slapfight in the middle of the food court.

I think Jason was the cute one eating ice cream in the corner.

I'd like to apologize to everyone right now and come clean.

Kottke is a hoax.

I created the character of Kottke as an experiment to see how far a web based character could go and now it looks like its gone too far. I knew it might be too much with the added "Meg" subplot, too, but I was too drunk with power at that point to know right from wrong and I've just let it all careen out of control. The people you see in pictures: I found those in a discarded photo album in Tampa, Fl. The X-10 thing: a ploy to get you all disinterested in this Frankenstein gone awry, and the fake apology above: a meek attempt to quell this thread and avert more attention. But now after mulling it over, I came to the conclusion that I would feel much better about myself if I just put an end to it once and for all and asked for forgiveness.

I'm sorry about all of this, really. You can go back to your lives now.

I thought you were going to say Kottke was a composite of three people you actually knew, and you just wanted to tell their stories.

The saddest part of this entire thread (aside from how many sycophants came out to coddle Kottke) is that Kottke pulled a Powazek "Woe is me, Poor Maligned Web Designer!" and you played right into his hands.

And, in the distance, a faint slurping sound was heard...

oh no, he was a composite of what I imagined my 2 cats would be like as humans. They don't really have much of a story to tell, so I pretty much pulled the rest out of my ass.

The saddest part of this entire thread (aside from how many sycophants came out to coddle Kottke) is that Kottke pulled a Powazek

So far the saddest part seems to be your lack of a sense of humor. Why do you have to be so mean, Dan? Why?

This is obviously a silly thread. We're all just having fun. Kottke is famous in this community whether he likes it or not, whether you like it or not. Let's just enjoy it.
