<a href="http://www.thestandard.com/article/0,1902,27092,00.html">Boeing </a> is upping the chance you'll be able to surf while you fly.. Question is: will more of these devices also mean a lower price?

Though I have no idea what they would charge for MeFi access on a flight, if I were asked by the travel agent, "Would you like internet access on this flight sir?"

After I'd jiggled my disbelieving head in a cartoonish double-take I'd say, "But of course."

She'd reply, "That will be twenty dollars extra added on to the final ticket price."

I'd say "Sure. Sounds reasonable."

Because I would pay another twenty to uninhibit the stream of thought surfing I already imbibe in on the ground.

Would anyone else shell out twenty clams more to surf on an extended flight (upwards of an hour and a half)? If so, what fee would be too much to render it a useless luxury?

Then again if every seat came wired and ready, free to use, my question would be moot.

<i>"Would anyone else shell out twenty clams more to surf on an extended flight (upwards of an hour and a half)?"</i>

Hell yeah. I'm taking a flight to Seattle next month, and I dunno what I'm gonna do on the plane. I bought a laptop recently (arrives Monday!) so that should help, though.

Man O man. Let me tell you what's already on some planes. That is if you've not been on the newest of United's 777s yet. No clue as to how widespread this is but:

It's common knowledge (I think) that behind every seat on a 777 is a personal monitor where one can channel surf a few channels. But I'd never seen one with a full color 3-D rendering of the topography, informing you on screen of what distant towns, mountains, rivers etc. were and giving you outside temperature, altitude and GPS data whether in taxi, takeoff, climbing, cruise or descent. I knew it got cold as you rise above the atmosphere. But to watch the temperature readout plummet to -77 F from +88 F in twenty minutes or so was absolutely amazing.

I would have probably paid an extra twenty bones for that. But alas, it was free and I hope they keep it. I was riveted to it for three hours of my three hour flight.
