It's Friday! Enjoy Necronomicon, a fun little flash-based card game inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

Sung to the tune of Chatanooga Choo Choo, and seemingly never posted to MetaFilter before?!?:

Pardon me boys,
Is this the lair of Great Cthlhu?
In the city of slime,
where it's dark all the time.

Full lyrics, if you dare.

I'm no expert on Magic-style card games, but this looked pretty great. Particularly the way the Sanity resource works. Also, I&auml! I&auml!

There must be a UTF-8 character that looks like one of the Old Ones... maybe something in the Thai alphabet.

I laughed, I cried, I crouched over the unnaturally contorted bodies of my enemies and laughed exultant into a rift in the sky even as a fresh batch of tentacles arose around me.

Finally!

The cards are right...

Is this something I'd have to be eldritch and rugose to understand?

No, but squamous is a help.

Kongregate for those of us who need to achieve imaginary accomplishments.

I played this game quite some time ago, but now i see that I HAVEN'T BEAT IT ALL THE WAY.

I think that the AI plays cards randomly. It was pretty easy. If you do well initially, you can skip levels and have better cards available than your opponents, which makes it even easier.

One moment while I consult the Necrotelicomnicon...

Yes, that's right. The ancient and dreaded Book of the Phone Numbers of the Dead.*

See, my biggest problem with this game is that it's possible to win. That just sets unreasonable expectations for when you actually have to deal with the Great Old Ones.

Yeah, well, try the last few challenge modes and then tell me how confident you are when dealing with the Great Old Ones.

Yeah, this is really cool! The AI isn't so terribly strong, though, you're right. Waht a pity there's no multiplayer!

really really fun and addictive. where did my work day go?

Yeah, this is a great game (and I'm not usually one for these kinds of card games). Thanks for posting it!

Well... that ate my day. Took awhile to get to the final level of Great Cthulhu though. Frankly, I was a bit surprised that it was that easy.

I liked this, but it did have some flaws as a card game. Random cards aren't much fun to "beat," since you don't so much outplay your opponent as hope it doesn't randomly play the good cards and instead spends all its time dropping Doctors for +4 life.

I got the impression, from the rank titles, that the idea is the further you delved into this stuff the more it altered and corrupted you. Or I read more into it to further my enjoyment.

I just popped in to say thanks a pantload, EarBucket. I spent the last two hours playing this damn game (the movie Commando on TV the whole time, because I couldn't be bothered to change it), and I have to go to bed now because my wife is going to be up in about seven hours and wondering why the hell the laundry is only half-done and what happened to all the pretzels.

Did I mention she's eight months pregnant with twins? Honestly, I'd rather face the Great Old Ones.

This was fun. The AI wasn't much worse than the one used in ye olde Magic PC game, way back when. It certainly ate up a couple of hours fast enough.

Thanks, EarBucket!

Where's the strategy guide? Still haven't beat the damn thing... If the AI is more or less random, that makes me feel pretty pathetic.
