Well... finally. Now I can get something done.

Anything that has it's own google topic should probably be considered old, cliche, etc.

Don't people EVER get tired of this???!!!

It's old! It's tired! It's stupid!

It's old!, old!, old!, old!, old!, old!, old!, old!

yes, but what is beyond the great last page.

I wonder what the rate of crossover is between people on MeFi who smack others down for posting something that was already posted (or that Just Isn't Cool), and the the people on Slashdot who ask "Is this really News for Nerds? Is this really Stuff that Matters?" about anything that's not about Linux.

A guy sees something that amuses him and posts it here, and somebody else hunts down EIGHT links to it to prove how 'done' it is.

At least end your post with "Muh-hey, um-glavin" or something. Geez.

i can see being miffed at seeing old stuff, i have not seen it. ...come to think of it i scream at commericals that i see over and over...thats why i cant watch t.v. for another TWO WEEKS. (thanks mom)

so what's the first page?
posted by Hankins at 7:56 PM on June 12, 2001

What I like about Dead End pages is that most of them have yet another link to somewhere else, and are therefore not really dead ends. Granted, some are most definitely dead ends without any links whatsoever, but there's more than one of those. This means that none of them are THE end. They are each "an" end, which makes them about as relevant as a 404 not found page.

Granted, it's only funNY the first time you personally see one, and after running into scores of these feeble attempts at humor it does get rather passe. It is tired. It is stupid. It is old. However, this doesn't make it any less fun to find them. In fact, the very fact they're tired, stupid and old just adds to the fun of End Pages. It's like watching really bad movies in order to MST them and make fun of them.

someone looking for the
first page?
posted by jcterminal at 8:09 PM on June 12, 2001

lol.. mefi is always a great source of amusement for arguments about petty stuff like this.. hehe.. :)

I think hankins has it right though.. what IS the first?
posted by Dn at 8:26 PM on June 12, 2001

jcterminal: of course, with the link to MeFi on that page, it only takes two clicks to get to the end of the internet :(
posted by pnevares at 8:29 PM on June 12, 2001

I didn't want to be rude, just helpful.

As far as slashdot is concerned. The day I see a "First Post!" post here I'll be rude. Don't make me rude. You won't like me when I'm rude.

Well, if were going to look at old stuff, here's a blast from the past:

THE REALLY BIG BUTTON THAT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING
posted by Foaf at 8:41 PM on June 12, 2001

What's with the URL for the site? Is looks like a music dot-com, but all the e-mail addresses that live there seem to belong to scientists, according to Google. The Centre for Dispute Settlement has the org. (The address in the title bar leads to a personal site that also has an "end of the Internet" page.) I'm probably just missing something and y6y6y6 will yell at me...
posted by Yogurt at 8:43 PM on June 12, 2001

Oh, it looks like it's just someone's personal site. There are hidden one-pixel links to some photos. Speaking of doing something productive, maybe I will now.

john: it's too late, bro!
posted by pnevares at 8:47 PM on June 12, 2001

You know, for the end of the Internet, there's a lot to look at here. If it weren't an even worse invasion of privacy, I'd put this one on filepile. Mmm cake. Speaking of which, I think my computer is controlling me.
posted by Yogurt at 8:51 PM on June 12, 2001

Actually, I'd be curious if someone has a pointer to the earliest known HTML page.

Pnervares,

Damnit, and there nowhere to run to at the end of the internet.

Last Post!

I had a friend in high school who, no matter what it was, as long as it was "cool" and "hip" believed she did everything first. First to like this band or that restaurant. First to wear beads or some shit. In fact, she probably lurks on slashdot somewhere today.

She was most, most, most annoying.

At least here we don't have annoying "Why's it so much easier for a gay guy to move? Cos his shit's already packed" SIGS. And clever little sigs of those sigs and so on.

I occasionally check hyperlinks to slashdot. I read it for anti "M$" uplift and other ponderous tech issues. I also liked the well a few years ago and have found MF to be a nice amalgam.

But this tweak Don't make me rude. You won't like me when I'm rude, I AM god tripe, is well. . . I hope you were kidding. Because you're tone is precisely why I don't particularly care for /.

I'd never seen it either Ryland. But that's what I hate about most "internet communities", they'll so greedily lap you up, swish you around and then spit you out. Like "they've" never seen something new before.

Swipe's is actually the first "end of the internet" I saw, and thus has a special place in my heart, Muh-hey, um-glavin.

Rdr, judging by the design, I'd say it was either this page or this one

Dead heat IMHO...

There some speculation on this topic in a previous thread (actually in true Metafilter fashion, it was in TWO previous threads), with a bold claim here.

Of course, my guess would be the "404 Page Not Found"...

What is this "Muh-hey, um-glavin" you speak of?
posted by Mocata at 3:46 AM on June 13, 2001

A catchphrase from the genius mouth of Professor John Frink, as seen on the Simpsons.
posted by JDC8 at 5:10 AM on June 13, 2001

I thought that was a reference to Jerry Lewis.
posted by sudama at 5:31 AM on June 13, 2001

Well, it is, indirectly, since Frink is a parody of Jerry Lewis' nutty professor character.
posted by RylandDotNet at 5:33 AM on June 13, 2001

I've seen it before, but with all the dot-carnage and dead blogs, plus the advent of summer, it really does feel like the end of the internet and (hopefully) the beginning of something New and Better (tm).
posted by mecran01 at 6:03 AM on June 13, 2001

I haven't been on the Internet in days! The last thing I need is someone telling me to leave! Well, until my father yells at me and says "Hey! You should be getting ready for work!"
posted by dagnyscott at 6:37 AM on June 13, 2001

Sure, it's old, but I bet I hadn't seen that since 1997 or 1998, so it was funny for me all over again.

of course, with the link to MeFi on that page, it only takes two clicks to get to the end of the internet

Shall we play "Seven Degrees of Mathowie"?
posted by briank at 8:31 AM on June 13, 2001

I never realized this before....but is that "Frink" as in what the lemurs do, or say?

Actually, I'd be curious if someone has a pointer to the earliest known HTML page.

I have a screenshot of the first browser, and there are a ton of old pages at W3.org.
posted by tranquileye at 1:10 PM on June 13, 2001

I found the posted link especially humorous today, probably due to lack of sleep. In fact, when I burst out laughing and called coworkers over to have a look, they weren't too impressed.

Old pages are best viewed in old browsers, take a look at evolt's browser collection. I think some of the v0.9 Netscape browsers work OK, the earliest few I tried mostly choke on http v1.1 that lots of web servers seem to use these days.
