I wonder what the rate of crossover is between people on MeFi who smack others down for posting something that was already posted (or that Just Isn't Cool), and the the people on Slashdot who ask "Is this really News for Nerds? Is this really Stuff that Matters?" about anything that's not about Linux.

A guy sees something that amuses him and posts it here, and somebody else hunts down EIGHT links to it to prove how 'done' it is.

At least end your post with "Muh-hey, um-glavin" or something. Geez.

What I like about Dead End pages is that most of them have yet another link to somewhere else, and are therefore not really dead ends. Granted, some are most definitely dead ends without any links whatsoever, but there's more than one of those. This means that none of them are THE end. They are each "an" end, which makes them about as relevant as a 404 not found page.

Granted, it's only funNY the first time you personally see one, and after running into scores of these feeble attempts at humor it does get rather passe. It is tired. It is stupid. It is old. However, this doesn't make it any less fun to find them. In fact, the very fact they're tired, stupid and old just adds to the fun of End Pages. It's like watching really bad movies in order to MST them and make fun of them.

I had a friend in high school who, no matter what it was, as long as it was "cool" and "hip" believed she did everything first. First to like this band or that restaurant. First to wear beads or some shit. In fact, she probably lurks on slashdot somewhere today.

She was most, most, most annoying.

At least here we don't have annoying "Why's it so much easier for a gay guy to move? Cos his shit's already packed" SIGS. And clever little sigs of those sigs and so on.

I occasionally check hyperlinks to slashdot. I read it for anti "M$" uplift and other ponderous tech issues. I also liked the well a few years ago and have found MF to be a nice amalgam.

But this tweak Don't make me rude. You won't like me when I'm rude, I AM god tripe, is well. . . I hope you were kidding. Because you're tone is precisely why I don't particularly care for /.

I'd never seen it either Ryland. But that's what I hate about most "internet communities", they'll so greedily lap you up, swish you around and then spit you out. Like "they've" never seen something new before.

Actually, I'd be curious if someone has a pointer to the earliest known HTML page

Rdr, judging by the design, I'd say it was either this page or this one

Dead heat IMHO...

There some speculation on this topic in a previous thread (actually in true Metafilter fashion, it was in TWO previous threads), with a bold claim here.

Of course, my guess would be the "404 Page Not Found"...

Sure, it's old, but I bet I hadn't seen that since 1997 or 1998, so it was funny for me all over again.

of course, with the link to MeFi on that page, it only takes two clicks to get to the end of the internet

Shall we play "Seven Degrees of Mathowie"?

Actually, I'd be curious if someone has a pointer to the earliest known HTML page.

I have a screenshot of the first browser, and there are a ton of old pages at W3.org.

I found the posted link especially humorous today, probably due to lack of sleep. In fact, when I burst out laughing and called coworkers over to have a look, they weren't too impressed.

Old pages are best viewed in old browsers, take a look at evolt's browser collection. I think some of the v0.9 Netscape browsers work OK, the earliest few I tried mostly choke on http v1.1 that lots of web servers seem to use these days.
