Prince Philip: Told by president Obama of meetings already that day with the Chinese, Russians, Brown and Cameron "Can you tell the difference between them?"

Rod Stewart: On hoping that his train set could be featured in Model Railroader magazine "It would mean more to me than the cover of Rolling Stone"

You don't say.

I don't see Rod Stewart's comment as particularly egregious - maybe his passion for trains outdoes his interest in music.

Mel Gibson: Well, frankly, anything. That man is batshitinsane. I'd lay money on him hurting someone badly before his time is up.

Obama: During memorial day, "Our nation honours its unbroken line of fallen heroes - and I see many of them in the audience here today" — d'oh!

It was just a surprise to learn that Rod is so passionate about model trains. I mean, heck, it's surprising to learn anyone is passionate about model trains. That a rock star is so into them is even more unusual.

I was going to snark all over this (people say things they might regret later? Really?), but Mickey Rourke makes it all worthwhile.

Is it perhaps Rod Stewart's model of Tom Waits' train, headed downtown? That could mean quite a lot to him, I'd suspect.

I thought it was going to be Steve Urkle lines. I'm still hoping....

Thank god for model trains, otherwise they would never have got the idea for the big trains!

Whatever you think of Oasis as a band, I hope you can at least agree that Noel Gallagher's one of the most entertaining and candid interviews in all of show biz; e.g.:

On Oasis's outstanding contribution Brit Award

We're finally up there with the Eurythmics, Sting and Bob Geldof. I don't think congratulations are in order (2007)

On Liam's song-writing

He's not as good as John Lennon. He's not as good as Jack Lemmon, God bless him (2000)

Rod Stewart may be obsessed with model trains, but he's still no Patrick Swayze.

Just don't ask Sebastian Bach about it, hincandenza...

I think it's more common than you know; Neil Young was a co-owner of Lionel Trains, is a huge enthusiast and hold several patents relating to model trains.

I think perhaps the people who are truly good at something impressive often have that thing as their secondary interest; it gives them more perspective than a person whose primary interest in that thing would have.

Which is why Rod Stewart feels that way about his music and model trains; because he loves his model trains first and foremost, he has the proper perspective on his music, but also an improper perspective on his trains.

Oh, Prince Philip, you never fail to bring the lol. To a British student in China: "If you stay here much longer, you will go home with slitty eyes."
posted by Xere at 8:38 PM on June 21, 2009

er, if it wasn't clear, I think having that perspective is what allows them to be so good at that secondary thing

The Sarah Palin list is just depressing.

If you think that's depressing, read what her fans say when Stylelist magazine mocks her toenail polish.

The Obama one is the best, in my opinion. I have a soft spot for political speech mess ups, I guess.

Though, what are we going to have now, Obama-isms?

To his wife after her coronation

Where did you get that hat? (1953)

Honestly, as much as the old boy puts his foot in his mouth on a reguklar basis (and I generally think he's just taking the piss when he does), that strikes me as such a wonderful moment between two married people.

Marisa Stole the Precious Thing, I cannot favorite your comment enough. Arg!

And yeah ... yeah ... I'm just waiting for someone I know to become famous so I can remind them of all the stupid things they said to me regularly.

I thought the Prince Philip ones were the funniest. But this could be because I've been a fan ever since I found out he is worshipped as a god on an island in the south pacific.

I don't like that they included quotes from Eddie Izzard's stand-up acts; it's like attributing the quote "I'm a cybernetic organism: living tissue over a metal endoskeleton." to Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I actually already knew that about Rod Stewart. Dude likes trains.

I give so little of a shit, that I wrote this comment.

The linked "diary" by Woody Allen is comedy gold. At least silver.
