shtterly, I think Tony Snow once made the comment (as White House Press Secretary) that racism was "just a sad part of our history" or something similar. There really are alot of white people who get resentful and testy when you bring up the fact that racism does, in fact, exist to this very day. As for me? OK Michael Bay deserves no defense, but the racism and stereotyping of Transformers extends back at least to cartoon, with the black autobots Jazz (a police car! named jazz!) and the breakdancing (ghetto-) Blaster. Harmless. Inoffensive. Unfunny. Childish Snark. Preaches to the Choir. Will Enlighten No One. There is a valid, nuanced argument to be made that ethnocentrism and racism has diminished overall but not been eradicated amongst some African Americans, Caucasians and other ethnicities in this country. Such an argument might talk about racial stereotypes that have become less acceptable to the majority, without indulging in them. It could look frankly at popular culture depictions of both groups to note where changes have and have not been made. Maybe it would talk about the average person's experience without the heavy-handed sarcasm. Perhaps it would even look honestly at political rhetoric on both sides of the spectrum and point out hypocrisy and misplaced, self-serving, self-righteousness. More substance, less "style" please.

I remember on the day of the election, when it was pretty painfully obvious that winds had changed and Obama was most likely winning, Joe Scarborough was starting on the "America is Post-Racial" line of BS. He was talking to his other insipid co-anchors and said, "You know what's great about my generation? I look at Obama and I just see a guy, I don't really see him as a black guy first." At that moment I had a horrific vision of how the next four years would play out after Obama won with Right-wing newsmachines hammering home, "Look, we're fine. They had their win, their moment in the sun, we can move on and don't have to question the idea that race and class may limit people in this country. Clearly, America is post-racial." So, when I saw this site and got annoyed at the heavy-handedness of the commentary, I remembered Joe's smug declaration and remembered this kind of stuff may still be needed.

Like "redneck," it's a class distinction used to imply all poor whites and "low class" whites are racists. But if you study racism in the South, it's a greater problem among the rich than the poor. From Bubba Isn't Who You Think: "...income levels seem to matter much more for voting in the South. Contrary to what you may have read, the old-fashioned notion that rich people vote Republican, while poorer people vote Democratic, is as true as ever – in fact, more true than it was a generation ago. But in rich states like New Jersey or Connecticut, the relationship is weak; even the very well off tend to be only slightly more Republican than working-class voters. In the poorer South, however, the relationship is very strong indeed." From Sharon Smith's excellent Race, class, and "whiteness theory": "When the racist poll tax was passed in the South, imposing property and other requirements designed to shut out Black voters, many poor whites also lost the right to vote. After Mississippi passed its poll tax law, the number of qualified white voters fell from 130,000 to 68,000."

oh man, i missed all the follow up. apologies for using the word whinge! thanks for the context shetterly, that's interesting. and i absolutely agree that it's good that 'racist' is considered insulting. i'm a canadian with a lot of british relatives, and the word 'cracker' has always sounded only superficially insulting to me, but i guess that is not the case in the south. in my experience though, 'racist' tends to be taken as the most hurtful insult. presumably because most whites desperately want to believe (especially in canada) that they are not racist.

moleccio, it's trickier than that. Some working class whites are taking back cracker and redneck--it's not necessarily racist or insulting. Wikipedia's got a good little article on "cracker". "Racist" is hurtful to some whites because racists beat us up in school for supporting civil rights.
