When I showed it off to a mailinglist full of cynical adfolk last week (see, I posted that same film subitted from the agency, here), the discussion instantly went to "how are they gonna keep their eyes on the road when that billboard is distracting the drivers, seems it would cause accidents...." which roughly translates to: "dang I wish I had thought of that".

Ugh. The child looks like it's bleeding from the eyeballs. I appreciate the creativity and effort involved in putting together an effective public safety campaign, but this seems unnecessarily macabre and gross. Like those anti-smoking commercials that show pictures of diseased lungs, timed to air when the viewing public is eating meals in front of the tv. It's the advertising equivalent of having a self-righteous, obnoxious friend yelling, "LOOK! SEE?! DISGUSTING, RIGHT? THAT'S YOUR LUNG, BECAUSE YOU SMOKE!!" in your ear. Thanks, but no thanks.

Wow, there's an amazing amount of "won't somebody think of the children" in this thread. Seems like a cool ad, to me. I suppose there's a remote possibility of a particularly clever ad distracting someone's attention to the extent that it created an accident--but that would be an argument against all billboards in general. Obviously if an ad is going to be effective at all it has to be attention-grabbing. In that sense "this could cause an accident" just means "this is a particularly effective ad."

We have some of the most brutal PSAs in the world here in New Zealand (like this anti-drinking ad). The latest road safety ad ends on a 20 second shot of a teenager in an overturned car screaming blue murder while he tries to stop his mate's dead body from falling on him.

This might be my favorite thing ever! It's a perfect real life analog to that effect they use in tons of video games and movies, where you are in a room, and suddenly the universe shifts and it changes; you are still in the same place, but everything is now a dark and twisted version of the original. If I was driving past this in the dry and returning in the wet, I'd seriously question my sanity. At the very least, I'd be fully expecting zombies or trans-dimensional monsters to show up shortly after.
