I was hanging with Dan this weekend, we both performed at Whartscape.

He's a nice dude, but I don't see why this is a fpp.
posted by cloeburner at 6:15 PM on July 15, 2009

Cloeburner, this is very popular among my friends. So, perhaps it has wide ranging FPP-worthiness.

Please explain to me how this is funny and/or psychedelic? If it is popular, ... why?

Some context would be awesome.

Here's a link to what purports to be his actual statement. It doesn't appear to exist any more at his myspace page. Seem's a perfectly reasonable statement to me. I've always found that "oh my god, he must have been sooooo high when he wrote/painted/animated that" line pretty moronic, myself.

If you're gonna go all Dan Deacon on us, don't forget to include Ultimate Reality.

Does Dan Deacon Do Drugs?

Don't Doubt It?

Or Don't Doubt Dan?

This video tries too hard and isn't funny. Just like Sarah Silverman, who recommends you watch the video

If, like not_on_display, you're wondering if you need a trucker hat, thick glasses, and an undeniable urge to fuck electronic instruments with your mind to care about Dan Deacon or what, check out this older post on him. Trust in the jujujive.

Thank you, carsonb. BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG is pretty awesome. And it explains why this is popular. ...Still don't think this one has anything to do with LSD or funny, though.
posted by not_on_display at 6:59 PM on July 15, 2009

It's popular because my friends and I thought that it was a recording of a real guy from Long Island tripping on LSD. We then thought that someone had made an animation to go along with it. And, yeah, we just thought it was funny.

Thanks for the background. Wikipedia Him

Maybe everyone would care more if they knew how this guy spends all the free time he has while he's not, you know, doing acid? Or why its significant that he has to defend against allegations that he does?

Unexpected non sequitur delivered matter-of-factly!

For the stuff that gets posted here under the auspices of humor, I'm amazed to see such a negative reaction to this. Because in my estimation, "Mr. Walkway, Mr. 'Walk-Down-Me I'm the walk way'. Lead me to the building. Fuck you." might be the greatest sentence ever constructed in any language.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Dan Deacon is like those shows that make me turn off WFMU.

Dan Deacon grew up on Long Island at a time when the local ska scene was burgeoning.

Holy FUCK! Done! Thanks for the warning!

I thought it was funny for the same reason and am disappointed to learn otherwise. I saw it and thought of Nick Park's Creature Comforts.

Cos he's like "I'm so imaginative and creative and wacky, I don't need acid to think up this sort of stuff on the fly".

It's not Dan Deacon who trips. It's Liam Lynch who's into drugs. Sifl & Olly anyone?

Lol. Lesson learned--two things metafilter doesn't do well are music and comedy-- put them together and you get the perfect storm of obliviousness. Mr. WalkonmeImaWalkway. No chance.
posted by Potomac Avenue at 6:25 AM on July 16, 2009

See, it's possible to appreciate Dan Deacon and get this completely and still think it's not funny. I even dig things that are along the same vein; this one just lacks the lifeblood necessary to make it live. It's totally one-note and lazy. For me, it just doesn't hit -- it feels like an approximation based on a particular—and already well-mined—aesthetic.

Also, the idea that there's something off with naysayers because they don't think it's funny and those who are hip do is, well, much funnier than this video could ever aspire to be.

Anyway, I'm gonna go datamosh a video of spiraling falafel sandwiches with videos of gameplay from NBA Jam Tournament Edition and dub over some tongue-in-cheek electronic music to regain my cred.
posted by defenestration at 7:17 AM on July 16, 2009

I agree this is much less funny if it is just Dan Deacon riffing on his couch in a fake accent. However, when you don't know that, it's pretty fucking hilarious.
posted by josher71 at 7:54 AM on July 16, 2009

The funny is the lack of context, really. Fidalisk barndt!
posted by functionequalsform at 8:57 AM on July 16, 2009

If anyone in the world still did acid, then nobody would be asking if he was on acid when he made this.
If only he and more people WERE on acid , things might be more interesting.

Crystal Cat. yes, it's something you'd have to get UTTER FUCKING AWESOME to understand.

I've been watching this video at least a couple times a week for the past month. While I'm not convinced it's FPP-worthy (I was gonna post it, but decided against it), it cracks me up every time.

My first guess was that it was a schizophrenic guy watching television, then I heard about it being a guy tripping on acid (watching television?). At no time did I believe it was scripted.
