Could you Blog for 24 hours straight? While some folks are happy spending a day Not Blogging, Cat over at Frykitty is looking for people to join her in her 24 hour charity Blogathon. Sign up to blog with her or just sponsor someone. While I do think spending 24 hours at a PC is a sure sign of insanity, I can certainly respect that sort of insanity.

I like to do stuff for charity but I don't know what a "blog" is or what you do with it. Is it clean and legal?

It's all good--I hope! Here's the short version: A participant chooses a charity, and agrees to make a new entry to their personal site every 30 minutes for 24 hours on July 28, beginning at noon Pacific Time. Sponsors choose a participant, and at the end of the blogathon, they send $$ to the appropriate charity. It's honor system to avoid any legal hassles.

While I do think spending 24 hours at a PC is a sure sign of insanity, I can certainly respect that sort of insanity. Totally agreed. It's insanity for charity, and I like that. The whole idea is good, but when you add in a cause, it gets even better.

I could do this. Even if I got to the point where I absolutely had to sleep, I could just put the laptop on the bed, and set my alarm clock to go off every half hour. I think it's eminently doable. Can we pick more than one charity?

For the sake of making it easy on the sponsors, I'd stick with one charity. Unless of course you want to do two blogs, hehe.

Last year, I blubbered about my mother toward the end. Yeah, it gets pretty interesting. It isn't as hard to stay up as you might think. You get kind of buzzed. Hey--I wonder if there's such a thing as a "blogger high."

Writing a few dozen blog entries in 24 hours should be no problem. I once turned out 80 pages of a user manual in that time period.

A friend and I thought about doing a 24-hour comic last year. Damned hard, really. Well, maybe harder when you're collaborating. And of course we wanted to do it on the web. Write...draw...scan...send...DING! I think it would have hurt.

Whoa! This is spooky. Just last week I had this idea, but I couldn't be assed to do anything about it *g* Although it was a little different.. kitty says: 'Participants agree to make an entry on their personal page at least once every 30 minutes for 24 hours.'.. I was thinking more about every few minutes. Hehe.. honestly doubt I could keep my eyes open that long though.

Oh.. and make sure that all people who join in are just doing it for the fun of it (rather than the publicity).. cuz you could easily end up with someone who writes a day's posts, then sets up a CGI script, lol.

Brit: ya know, I thought about that. Before I decided I was doing it for charity, it bothered me. Now I don't care. :) What's important is raising money for the cause. Of course I'd prefer no one used a script. I think there will be a lot of email and IM flying back and forth, so not being live won't be that easy. You'd be found out. So, you folks that have said you could do it--you signing up, or just blowing smoke? ;)

I hope Blogger doesn't decide it doesn't think much of the blogathon and go sleepy for a while. There might be a few blood-curdling screams from weary bloggers at around the 20 hour mark when they discover an error message after posting.
