Best accompanied by ambient music, plenty of free time, and/or lots and lots of psychedelic drugs.

But what a Depeche Mode single is doing in there, I'll never know. Hell, I don't know what anything is doing anywhere.

I kinda dug the colour scheme progression, but, yeah. No context.

Lots of slender girls, lots of hairy dudes. ??

LOOK AT US JUST LIKE EASY RIDER EXCEPT WITH MOAR POT AND BOOBIES

AND INTERSPECIES EROTICA

As far as single pages with tons of disjointed photographs go, this is pretty much the top of the heap.

It looks like either a mood board for something or just a place for someone to keep the pics they like.

Although my husband says, "Why are you looking at Vice Magazine meets American Apparel?"

So... someone used Google Image Search and found the most random jpegs they could in the theme of women, shoes, motorcycles - to name a few - and then posted it all on one site? One site that takes a while to load because of all of the random jpegs?

I just don't get it.

You must've not made it past page one. The other pages also have little odd subthemes. Guns drugs and women seems to be the theme of page two, although there is a lot of overlap, even repeated pictures.

You know what this is? This is a spiral notebook with cutout and xeroxed photos pasted in it. This is Truman's collection of eyes and noses and lips, before he's torn it up to try to assemble The Face, Her Face.

Frankly, I hate the format. I could see scraping all the pictures and assembling an interesting a/v thang out of it. Hrm. *thinks of upcoming halloween party* I'll have to think about that.

Strange photo set, but fun.

Wow. What Michael Jackson may look like in the year 2000.

So close!
posted by Sova at 8:12 PM on August 1, 2009 [1 favorite]

There is nothing to get here. Someone has amassed a collection of thousands of images that is damned close to representing a stream of consciousness. The site obviously isn't screaming out for attention, much less criticism.

It is like someone ran out of space for posters on their dorm room wall and found some empty space on the internet... like any other worthwhile dorm room, they left the door open and blared the music.

One thing it shows is that the rail-thin model has been around longer than you might think.

I had hoped heroin chic would have died out in the 70s.

Yawn. While I'm feeling like I should have a reaction to these images (for some reason, Diane Arbus comes to mind, in a lesser way) they strike me, but in a non-visceral way.

This kind of feels like a TimeCube with images instead of words, and way more sex (disclaimer: TimeCube could have the Kama Sutra thrown in there for good measure, and I wouldn't be surprised).

Also, since when did Elvis spank an adult woman and this didn't even faze the censors?

Cultural American, if you will. Relics of faded eras, subcultures, and and evocative scenery. Sometimes refers to the past with irony such as the smoking ads. I like it.

Imagine being in a park in the big city. You're reading Vice Magazine. A huge American Apparel model stares from a couple of billboards above you. Some hairy dude on a motorcycle roars by while a couple of hipsters flirt on the next park bench.

Now you don't need to see the now-missing page.

There are a lot of...things?...like this floating around. Tumblelogs or curated photo collections that quietly celebrate thinness and hedonism and a privieleged youth subculture and infanitilized women and affected masculinity and "art" and "aesthetics" and "the eighties" and some perversion of punk rock.

And tits. There seem to be a lot of tits involved.

Is (was) there really that much 80s content in those photos? I saw a lot of 70s, 60s, pretty much any era post-obscenity-law-enforcement.

But then, I only got through the first 4 pages before the ISP hosting the blog tanked.

Now it works. This book is so wonderfully 1975 (oops -- checked Amazon and the actual copyright is 1976; I was close, anyway). The typeface, the line art, and that photo! I think if I ever decided to collect books it would be small press books of the 1970s, because the aesthetic and tone are so strong and clear, and so charmingly earnest.

Anyway, I quite like all the photographs. Hippy porn, motorcycles, tattoos, trucks, guns... what's not to like? I do wish they came with links back to their sources, or where they were found, because with lots of them I want to know more.
