Where the hell is jessamyn?

Hiding. She's no dummy.

They first photographed the sexy tattooed librarians, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a sexy tattooed librarian. Then they photographed the sexy tattooed after-school volunteers, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a sexy tattooed after-school volunteer. Then they photographed the IT lady who's helpful and sort of cute and sits in the back reading the manga books nobody checks out because they're all stacked in that weird unlit young adult fiction section right next to all those copies of Chicken Soup for the Soul in the young adults non-fiction section, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't her. Then they came for me—and coughed awkwardly a little before asking me if I could assist the photographer.

Where the hell is jessamyn?

Vermont. These are Texas librarians. Most Texas librarians outside of Austin refuse to admit that librarians in Vermont or Massachusetts or New York have the same job title. The photographers should have clarified things by having all their librarians wear stereotypical cowboy hats. Although The Naked Cowboy IS in NYC, so maybe they didn't want that association.

Doesn't specifically mention beards and Pynchon, but I'm sure there'd be someone in there who fit the bill [if not, MeMail me; I know some people].

These are great and all, but whenever I see links about tattooed librarians I get all excited thinking about the awesome tattoos someone who has devoted their life to books might get. Chaucer related! Shakespeare! Or something library related, like Ranganathan's five laws! Full sleeves of text! But all I ever get are pictures of folks with a starfish, or a moon. It seems like some of those women have larger scale tattoos, but I can barely see them.

Guess I'll just have to buy the calendar.

Despite that I'm a tattooed librarian, I don't really have much to say about this calendar. Some of the women are more attractive than others, and some are more heavily tattooed (and with tattoos I like better), than others. But I feel like lingering on those very obvious facts might be missing the point.

It's getting a ton of media coverage, which I would like to think is a good thing in terms of raising the profile of libraries and librarians, making tattoos more socially acceptable and widening the standards of 'professional' appearance in this rapidly-changing polyglot society. Yeah, I'm an optimist. And I hope they sell a whole lot of calendars.

"It was just a fun thing to do," said Gretchen Hoffmann, 42, who turned up the heat as Miss August 2010 by posing on a row boat, a purple boa strategically draped to highlight the starfish tattoo on her upper back."I like the idea that the calendars are stereotype-busters.
Hey look! It's VIA jessamyn! ftfy.

Hey I have a tattoo! Two tattoos. Neither are literary though. One keeps monsters away.

Who is so stupid, though, that they think of librarians as little old ladies with buns?

The idiot media.

I was at a wedding yesterday for a goot friend who I have known since I was eleven. One of her friend's parents who has also known me about that long was asking what i was up to. I gave her the short list, do technology instruction, help run a website, rural librarian and she was all "Oh I always thought you'd be doing something interesting...."

I'm with box, I'm almost as excited to see the tattooed angle to this [hey smart interesting people can have tattoos!] than the librarian angle [hey librarians, they're not what you think!] but I hope they raise a ton of money and I'm happy to help publicize the thing however I can.

Next up should be some sort of MetaFilter: My Internet Friends calendar to raise money for .... some good cause.

I could swear there's a rash (so to speak...ew) of these hott librarian calendars every four or five years, but it's been a while since I saw one. Then we all get to be like, hey, some librarians are hot! And others of us get to be like, hey, not all librarians are old! and then others among us are all, hey, i'm a hot librarian, but the ones in this here nekkid calendar are old!

Anyway. I couldn't find more than passing mention of many, but here's at least coverage of a couple. (Does a livejournal page count as coverage?)

Wisconsin, 2005. (sadly, no pics anymore)

Camden, UK, 2003

Here in Exeter we have a lady librarian with full-sleeve tattoos. It's quality work, but as far as I can see, nothing to do with books.

I must admit a few years back when I rented The Filth And The Fury from the library I was mildly surprised when the librarian started chatting to me about the Sex Pistols. Though the fact she had purple hair might have clued me in.

Where I'm from it seems like half the DJ's/promoters are librarians, playing everything from indie-rock to reggae/bhangra. Then there's the "rock/folk/gothic" band named after a Dostoevsky character. Not to mention whenever I go to a gig I see people I work with or went to library school with. Seems like it's harder to find a librarian who isn't obsessed with music, than one who is.
