It involves a balance of rhythm, pace, and style--you need to keep track of the count, engage the audience, and fetch the highest price for the product. Here's a close look at the art of auctioneering.
They HAVE to talk fast so the cattle don't have time to realize what's going on. posted by longsleeves at 11:56 AM on August 5 [4 favorites]

At the end of this link the guy takes out the filler words and you can understand and follow along just fine. Makes me wonder what the hell the filler words are for. Rhythm? I dont buy it. Seems like the result of a culture where tradition is often more important than anything else. This seems like tradition run amok.
On the other hand it does sound kinda cool and if the audience can understand him, then why not. posted by ElmerFishpaw at 12:09 PM on August 5
I can show you a host of places like here and there and here and here, too and so on where I'd like to smack you for posting such along list of links that do not explain themselves. don't just link to something you think is awesome but describe it so we can decide if we want to investigate this for ourselves as well. your style of posting displayed here is unhelpful and pretentious. posted by krautland at 1:00 PM on August 5
I wonder if any of these guys talk in their sleep.
Man, that would be annoying. posted by twoleftfeet at 2:13 PM on August 5
Nice post. Thanks!
The Herzog doc is one of my favorite pieces of all time, not least because of the awesome version of Country Roads played by some local band in a barn. posted by wemayfreeze at 5:16 PM on August 5
I enjoyed the guy in the first video who would gesture with his cellphone when he wanted to bid. O brave new world...
Also - I had a friend in Idaho whose granddad who would doze off at the auctions and bid in his sleep. As far as I know the cows were okay, though. posted by smartyboots at 5:47 PM on August 5
