Oscar goes For Five
He will attempt to join Hall of Famers Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns as the only boxers in history to win world championships in five weight divisions when he challenges WBC super welterweight champion Javier Castillejo on Saturday, June 23. I find the middle weight divisions more credible and fun than the heavyweight division.

*yawn* watching people beat the living sh*t out of each other in what would be assult anywhere else. What fun.

Well, isn't that essentially what all contact sports are? At least with the "sweet science", there isn't the pretense of involving a puck or ball.

Oh and riley370, I second your opinion on favoring non-heavyweight divisions; there is more of an emphasis on speed and agility with the lighter divisions (witness a good bantam-weight match sometime and you'll see the difference). I also await the day that headgear becomes required equipment.

Why are there so many belts and organizations in boxing? I never understood that, because it was such a big deal when Holyfield(?) had "both" heavyweight belts, and nobody had done this for a while? It would be like having an NFC and AFC champion and they never played against each other...

Throwing 90 mph fastballs at someone--or said someone hitting said fastballs with big sticks at other particular someones--would also be considered assault anywhere else also. So would wrestling.

Sorry to be cranky, but *yawn* is becoming my least favorite MeFi posting tactic. Why? Why bother polluting the thread when you obviously just don't care?

As a fan, with boxing I have to forget some things that get in the way, as I do with baseball and hockey. Or I guess that could apply to anything I enjoy. With love or warm days ...you have to "forget" the distractions. With boxing so much stuff can get you angry. And I would really rather see Oscar fight Trinidad or Mosley, but it is all in the money and the deals and far away.

Owillis...

There are actually *3* different belts (one for each organization). The main reason, as far as I can figure out, that there are 3 is because the networks (such as Sky, Showtime, HBO) all "own" one of the belts. I think there are like 16 or 17 weight divisions too, so there's something like 50 or so championship belts in boxing.

Felix Trinidad is my favorite boxer right now, so I'd really like to see him fight Oscar, considering they've both won a trillion fights in a row (more or less, heh).
